so many things going on in the world but my life somehow skitters back and forth and forward

went to Napa Valley wine country for the food on my birthday earlier this month. Here is my flickr album but you can see some of the food on this page of my tags rn.

still have to go through Father's Day photos because we went to a Puerto Rican restaurant and I really like Puerto Rican food that goes beyond rice and beans. give me all the plaintains (and gas pain)

so...Euro 2016...some very interesting results. So great to watch Iceland. Still rooting for Germany of course (#11 scores! aw the memories), and France can be here and there. Poland sometimes catches my interest. too bad for Ireland and some other underdogs but at least they got good wins. haha England. at least it seems like the worst fans left before the round of 16. usually don't root for Italy but (sorry to fans) I was glad they knocked out Spain.

didn't get to see much of Copa America because of work
I did see the last US win, as well as a replay of much of a certain 7-0 game...
on Sunday, I was at PF Chang's bar during my work lunch hour (technically dinner but whatever). The mall was closed but the restaurants outside weren't.
Before the store closed, I saw one or two people in various club shirts, but someone passed by in a Dortmund jersey with Reus on the back and I was like !!! Made me wonder if I would have ended up supporting Dortmund if I started watching soccer later...especially since I like these Polish players (though one was eaten up by Bayern like so many) instead of trying to catch the odd game of unfortunate Bremen...
anyways while I was eating I heard "R U Mine?" play overhead and I was like yesssss. and then I saw on the ESPN news ticker that the Copa America final was about to end overtime and go to penalty kicks and I asked them to switch the TV channel so I could see. And Messi missed! I don't like or hate him or anything it's just a surprise.

wasn't able to get tickets for the Arsenal - MLS All-Stars game, but I'll check again before the match, and if not, I'll go to a place near the stadium to watch with fans.

oh, now I have a videocamera and tripod of my own! also updated my phone because my old hand-me downs became too troublesome. We'll see if I can get myself to be more productive with time and tech. Also going to see if I can use my gift card to get a dolly for the tripod.

btw two of the online compliments for the store where I work thanked me by name for my service!

sometime I'll get to the Penny Dreadful finale. heard it was disappointing but I'm not too invested and the show was often inconsistent anyways. Animal Kingdom started ok but I didn't finish the 2nd episode because it wasn't special enough, besides some good acting, for me to actually carve out time to watch. Orphan Black had an overall solid fourth season, and I'm trying out Thirteen on its BBC America airdates.

still catching up verrrrry slowly on Okkupert, Adventure Time, and Manhattan (I was waiting until I had enough free credits to "purchase" official stream episodes). Waiting out the hype on other shows I haven't tried yet, but maybe I'll start Gomorrah, Detectorists, Bojack Horseman, The Night Of, or Wentworth. Maybe some Japanese or Korean shows or whatever's waiting in my watchlists/bookmarks/drafts. Found that my libraries have more connections to streaming sites that make it easier and actually legal to stream some movies, TV, and books that are hard to find.

in the past six days I:

- broke my glasses
- had to get an eye exam and new glasses, then rush in late to my brother's graduation
- then we watched the GoT finale, packed our bags, and drove to Reno
- I watched World Cup (sometimes on all the ESPN-showing TVs while walking through one casino to another) games
- did other things while my family gambled (not into gambling for money, especially when the cent-games aren't interesting to me): walked around the casino floor, read restaurant menus, started AND finished a book I brought in my purse, whined a bit, played in arcades if the hotel had any (got these prizes too), and took pictures like this:

Then we drove back down around Lake Tahoe:

The first seven posts in this tag have more pictures I took.

Earlier this month, I finally updated my film blog with a comparison of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

I've been watching World Cup but I haven't been reblogging pictures on Tumblr because I didn't feel comfortable with posting pictures after all the mess involved in "preparing" the area for the games. Yeah it does nothing to help but it's what I'm doing.

Don't know how long we'll be staying in the Davis-Sacramento area, so we took advantage of the relatively short distance (about 2.5 hour drive) to Lake Tahoe and Reno as a graduation present for my bro. Also, midweek hotel prices were pretty good if you could find an open room. Also we haven't been out of state in forever.

I'm going to the apartment gym much more. Use it while I still can. It's funny when I'm exercising while watching a game, though, because sometimes I get stuck watching a particular play and I have to catch myself before doing more repetitions/losing count/holding for longer than planned. If we got cherries on sale, I bring them to the gym with my water bottle because I heard that cherries, pomegranates, and similar fruits help muscle recovery after workouts. Also incorporated 30 Days of High Intensity Interval Training into my regimen. It's helpful because you can adjust it to any level of skill or endurance or general amount of time.

I need to take more action job/life-wise but I just feel stuck and in a dull panic where I can't even think of a recent success or failure to write as a response to a job application query. Now that my brother's out of school, we're trying to figure things out, but my body's like set on chill fatigue while my mind races. I just turned 26 but feel stuck sometimes at 16, in good ways and bad, or as weary and cynical as someone who's endured lifetimes' more hardship. Even the writing I do for no pay takes me a long while to complete. I'm almost afraid to talk with or meet any of my classmates who only know me from school days. I shouldn't compare myself to any accomplishments they post on Facebook or LinkedIn but it happens.

I forgot to check about international matches last night

whoa Germany beat Austria 6-2

I know the USA game is at 8 PM on ESPN2. I hope I'll be home then.

Now that myp2p.eu is gone, I'm using vslive.tv because it's easier for me to figure out games in advance with this site rather than atdhe. However, I have to remember to check it every day, instead of twice a week (Friday night for Saturday match updates, Saturday/Sunday midnight for the rest of the week).

I'm also listening to A Game of Thrones on audiobook. Listening to audiobooks is weird for me, my attention wavers differently. It's like reading a book in a dream. I tend to fare better listening to short stories on the radio. But I'm really liking the book so far. The characters are very interesting.

Yesterday, we went to Hooters because my mom wanted the crab legs. Our table had a picture of Alyson Hannigan with a waitress aww.
So many TVs. one was showing FSC, so I caught up on footie highlights (5-0? good thing I missed that) and I explained/blabbed about a lot of things to my parents. My brother was like "stop talking about soccer" but seriously, we're together so much that I'm glad we had something different to talk about.

also, there was a baby, sitting in the little McDonald's inside Walmart, that was waving to me! I wasn't sure, so I kept looking and walked a bit, but then it (wasn't sure if girl or boy) kept waving. So I smiled and waved back. The baby was so happy when I did! aww I made a baby happy.

also at Wal-mart: I read the latest isssue of TV Guide (the sci-fi issue) and they mentioned Being Human not one, but three times! Once in the weekly "what to watch" section, once in the "what's going to happen in your favorite sci-fi/genre shows" article, and then in a favorable special review! eeeeeeee
I hope I can read next week's issue - they'll have to mention something about Gilbert

Kings is over! :(
and it actually set up a potential second season very well. pooh. Instead, NBC's giving us Jay Leno five times a week.

JOSE MOURINHO WILL SPEAK ON THIS SUBJECT NOW. I am the Special One. Chelski FC should have never fired the Special One, for if you fire the Special One, you are left with inferior people who think they are Special Ones. Like Grant. Who cares about this Grant? I do not care about people who look like frogs. And Scolari? Pfft. Jose Mourinho will manage any team to success, including Portugal National Team!!! For now, Jose Mourinho will focus on Inter, and climbing his way to the top of ITALIA!!!

I give up I give up…I couldn’t do it…I can’t watch any more TV episodes…internet or otherwise. I give up!

I FAIL AT TV

My rules were pretty strict, though. I had to have seen the episode from the very beginning, with permission made for bathroom breaks and stuff during the episode. So that’s why there’s so few Brothers and Sisters episodes and other shows - I watch them in bits, but I rarely catch the whole thing. Also, news/late night shows like Late Night With Conan O'Brien were not counted.

You see later on that I started to include sports events I watched on TV. This was inspired by [livejournal.com profile] padfootie’s monthly recap posts. I wanted to keep a record of them somehow. I didn't write down the Olympics, though, because that would be too much.

Sometimes I would comment on an episode. No comment doesn’t mean no reaction.

I'm actually really surprised and happy that I got such a high grade in the Human Biogeography of the Pacific class, because I wasn't doing so well there, and it was the class I was most worried about. I'm a bit disappointed with the Architecture and Music grades, but I should have followed my gut with the Architecture group project and bothered the others about format, and the Music problems were all my own. I just wish I could have had a grade for the pass/fail undergrad research (llama caravan video editing) to raise the B's a bit. But oh well, not bad. Next semester's my big writing semester...lots and lots of typing ahead, I think.

the new classes:

Anthro 114 - History of Anthropological Thought

English 143 B 002 - Verse: How to Write Lyric Poems
In this course you will conduct a progressive series of experiments in which you will explore the fundamental options for writing poetry today -- aperture, partition, closure; rhythmic sound patterning; relations between the sentence and line of verse; image & figure; shortlined and longlined free verse; stanza; graphics and poetic space; poetic forms (villanelle, sestina, pantoum, ghazal, prose poem, etc.); the first, second, third personas (speaker and poet, addressee and reader; apostrophe and drama; narrative and description); and cultural translation. Our emphasis will be placed on recent poets, with an eye & ear always to renovating traditions. You will write a poem a week, and we'll discuss several in class; on alternate days, we'll discuss examples drawn from a course reader. It will be delightful.
this was the class I had to send a 5 page sample in for...I'm so glad I was able to get in. Now I'm going to feel intimidated by all the English majors and stuff...I should go look up the teacher sometime

FILM STUDIES 180A - Screenwriting
Instructor approval is required. Preference is given to Film Studies and Art Practice majors.
I emailed the instructor, though, and she said I should at least show up with a piece of creative writing and try.
They also had classes on The Wire and Asian Horror, but time didn't work out.

I really do want to see good TV like The Wire and Mad Men sometime. But I don't feel like it right now. Like Band of Brothers, I need all the hype to die down before I can approach those shows with a clean appetite. Or something. I'm just weird.

I did just see the pilot for Sons of Anarchy. It's interesting, and many people rightly describe it as a biker drama with a touch of Hamlet. Nice to see another side of NorCal (though I don't know if they shoot up here). Not nice to see that bit of facial hair on Charlie Hunnam. The cast is good (hey, it's Ron Perlman! and the guy who played The Winchesters' maternal grandfather!), but it didn't get my attention as much as

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA

Basically, a brother and sister run an Irish bar with their two friends.

Dennis: We could get into a lot of trouble for this.
Dee: And we also have a social responsibility to keep teenagers from drinking.
Charlie: I guess.
Mac: Well, I don’t know about that though. Hold on, I mean, wait a second, hear me out, hear me out - it wasn’t that long ago that we were in the same position as these youngsters, right? I mean, we’d get kicked out of some bar and what did we do, Den? We would get a bunch of forties from a homeless guy and we would go sit in some park.
Charlie: That is true.
Mac: That is absolutely true. And what would happen? We would almost get raped and/or murdered and/or stabbed by the crackheads in Fairmount Park.
Charlie: You want to know what else what would happen? We drove Nicky Potnick’s car into a tree on Kelly Drive.
Dennis: With Sweet Dee in the back seat, puking all over the headrest because some guy talked to her that she liked, remember that? Every time some guy talks to you that you like, you get so nervous that you drink yourself into oblivion.
Dee: No, no, I had bad…potato salad.
Mac: You abused alcohol, and that’s OK, that’s OK, but it’s very dangerous, right? Right? Well maybe, we should look at this whole thing from a different angle. Maybe we have a social responsibility to provide a safe haven for these kids to be kids. You know, experiment!
Dee: No, I don’t like where this is headed.

I spent a ton of time trying to catch up with flist yesterday (I didn't even know who was playing Champions League! that's how behind I was. I did quickly check in the school bar on Wednesday, but Arsenal wasn't playing and they weren't showing the Bremen game and I was craving foods and yeah), but things have been crazy and I haven't been able to read anything dated from Thursday night on. So I'll probably start flisting anew tomorrow night. sorry, y'all. If there's something I should see before then, please leave a link -or a pic!- here.

now, I've been tossing around this idea for a while, maybe just for an essay, or maybe even a senior honors thesis - that's optional at my school, though, and I'd really have to force myself to do it, but...

I've been thinking about Livejournal. Specifically, how
an LJ is simultaneously an identity, a place, and a product

Identity in how people identify an LJ as representative of a person. It may be the only way one person knows another. For example, "LJperson told me today..."

Place as in: a place to find and contact an LJ user, a place to find thoughts and links and pics and such...I'm not sure whether I should include communities or if they'll just overcomplicate things...

Product as in: even though we like to say and think that our journals are there for us to say whatever we want, I think that many of us tailor our posts to certain audiences. Maybe not to all the flist at once, but we do shape and craft posts like a product to be consumed.

there might also be something about responsibility in there too, how we feel obligated to post about certain things, or at least remind the flist we're alive. I've been gathering possible sources and phrases for academic research. Maybe I'll keep this summer free. Or start something this winter. or something.

Any thoughts on this?

finally, for fun:
They Fight Crime! Get your crimefighters here.
He's an otherworldly devious gentleman spy haunted by an iconic dead American confidante She's a mistrustful belly-dancing college professor with an evil twin sister. They fight crime!

He's a Nobel prize-winning sweet-toothed werewolf from the 'hood. She's a psychotic impetuous socialite who can talk to animals. They fight crime!
lol I wonder if there's a connection between the lycanthropy and the animal-talking

He's a deeply religious vegetarian shaman on the hunt for the last specimen of a great and near-mythical creature. She's a chain-smoking French-Canadian queen of the dead on the trail of a serial killer. They fight crime!

He's a fiendish pirate barbarian looking for a cure to the poison coursing through his veins. She's a strong-willed foul-mouthed mermaid from out of town. They fight crime!
There needs to be a good modern mermaid story. Or mer-man. Besides Prince "Sub-Mariner" Namor, who has been underrated awesome for like fifty years now.

Oh! and this:
Possible new TV show: "Americatown"
Welcome to "Americatown," a Chinatown-like enclave of U.S. immigrants in cities around the world.

HBO is developing the futuristic drama series project, which hails from writer Bradford Winters and producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.

Set 25-40 years into the future when the precipitous decline of the U.S. leads to a mass exodus of its citizens, "Americatown" takes place in a cluster of newly arrived American immigrants in a big foreign city.

Sounds like a really really good idea. Fantastic potential for great storytelling. I hope they make it good.
