Listen to KCEA 89.1 FM
In 1979 the Sequoia Union High School District, which owns the broadcast license for KCEA 89.1 FM, established it as a high school radio station. This station features big band music from the 30's and 40's, 24 hours a day. KCEA serves as the disaster information station for the surrounding area.
KCEA has a library of over a thousand albums and compact discs of the big band era, which is always expanding. KCEA produces and airs free Public Service Anouncements (PSA's) for local events such as concerts, dances, community activities, and information on consumer and health awareness.
I emailed them asking about a song I missed and they replied politely and promptly. yay for public radio staying alive!
Two of the songs I discovered via the station:
Skylark - Dinah Shore. They played the Ella Fitzgerald version, and while that's still my fave, I think Dinah Shore is an adequate substitute. :)
"Lover, Come Back to Me"
I wasn't sure if this was the song I heard, exactly, but it really did sound like Sarah Vaughan...
Grace Moore, soprano, singing it in 1931
Ella Fitzgerald's version, more fastpaced
The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
the one I heard was slow and pretty, but when I tried to find the Sarah Vaughan version, I only found the song you can hear here. Same title, but cooler lyrics.
hear my voice where you are
catch a train, steal a car
hop a freight see the stars
come back to me
this site lists all the people who covered that original version. Whoa.
now, for music from this century
video for Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Zero"
Not so big on the song, but I like the video
partly due to the use of The Warfield in SF, but what's fun is Karen O dancing around, as well as the little stagey fakeouts. Sometimes I find her posing annoying, but she's so cute and cool here, and the lo-fi look is great.
now for a song that's been in my head for a while
Blood Red Shoes - "I Wish I Was Someone Better.
yay dance rock! The video's not as great, but it's got a fine dark vibe with weird blindfold interrogation posing and the use of a guitar as clock and machine gun

Kings was awesome and epic, even through most of the corny and predictable parts. It's that blend that Heroes so wants to be.
I especially like the superwide shots. The very last moment, though, almost made me groan...I kept on hoping it was a hallucination or something. Word is that it keeps getting better through the four episodes sent to critics.
The biggest worry I had about the show beforehand was that David and the princess would be too bland. While they're no Best!Character!Ever!, they ended up more fresh-faced and grounded, even with stereotypical character traits. I also liked that the jealous son also had more serious reasons for jealousy and anger.
It will also be interesting to see a grown-up Maculay Culkin turn up in the fourth episode.
