Got my first class of the school year done. -jumps-
I've still got the BART schedule programmed in my system, so I knew when to stand and when to get off the train and the fastest way to get to the building my class was in and so on. Finding the class, however, took a bit more mental effort. Wasn't late, though. The professor's cool. It's Intro to Native American Studies, so she hopes to upend many of the myths we students have accumulated over the years...Lots of reading, but there are a lot of freshmen in the class, so I don't think it'll be too hard as long as I keep up with everything.

My next class is in four and a half hours. yup. ;) I've got a reader to buy, a Statement of Intent or something for that URAP app (why procrastinate me no) to type, and lunch to eat and flists to scan.

I really hope that last semester's sleepy slump will be the last one of my college career.

Okay, so I remember seeing a "7 songs of summer" meme somewhere, and I planned on doing it before school started. I even procrastinate on memes! bad bad
I might as well do it now.

These songs aren't all new, but they are songs that hung out in my head during the summer and paid some great emotional rent. or something. :)

1) "We Used to Vacation" - Cold War Kids
Oh my gosh. I can't relate to the specific events in the song, but I can sure relate to the feeling - Still things could be much worse/natural disasters/on the evening news. I memorized this whole thing. It's got a nice funky beat too. I kept on talking about the band, putting their lyrics in posts. I even bought the CD Robbers and Cowards, which I really enjoy. Yeah, I kind of like the song.
Listen/Download: Daytrotter, along with three other songs by Cold War Kids

2) "Stop Me Medley" - Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather
It's two songs mixed into one fabulous tune. And it isn't a mashup or DJ mix! haha! Ronson melds 70's horn-filled R&B with 21st-century sensibility, creating something sweet, fresh, and accessible. And it's genius how well the lyrics of two songs (The Cure's "Stop Me" and some other song that I've heard before) fit together. It was one of the main reasons I bought Mark Ronson's Version.

3) "Sister Rosetta (Capture the Spirit)" - Noisettes
The song starts out with a cool bass line,
She’s a caged animal
London by night
Crashing lights and cymbals
Queens of twilight

and then slowly picks up energy and forces all feet to dance - or at least tap to the beat.
Baby when I am laid to rest
May my laughter remain
Like your kiss blew me away

So fun. Download it at Culture Bully.

4) "Jumpers" - Sleater-Kinney
Sleater-Kinney is a (currently on hiatus) trio of women who really know how to rock. Their sound is raw and angry, and can kick the butt of a lot of the bands out there. Their lyrics were smart little stories, usually addressing female inequality and stuff like that. "Jumpers" is my favorite set of lyrics by them. The sound is awesome as well.
spend the afternoon in cars
I sit in traffic jams for hours
Don't push me
I am not OK

The sky is blue most every day
The lemons grow like tumors they
Are tiny suns infused with sour

Lonely as a cloud
In the Golden State
"The coldest winter that I ever saw
Was the summer that I spent..."

The only substance is the fog
And it hides all that has gone wrong
Can't see a thing
Inside the maze

There is a bridge adored and famed
The Golden spine of engineering
Whose back is heavy
With my weight

Be still this old heart
Be still this old skin
Drink your last drink
Sin your last sin
Sing your last song
About the beginning
Sing your song loud
So the people can hear
Let's Go
Be still this sad day
Be still this sad year
Hope your last hope
Fear you last fear
You're not the only one
Let's Go

My falling shape will draw a line
Between the blue of sea and sky
I'm not a bird
I'm not a plane

I took the taxi to the gate
I will not go to school again
Four seconds was
The longest wait

Amazing. I'm more of a music girl than a lyrics lass (ha!) but one cannot just ignore something like that.

5) "Souretsu (Funeral Procession)" - Shiina Ringo
I know I squee a lot about Ms. Shiina. But this song goes from sitar to koto to pop/rock to PIPE ORGAN and makes it all flow perfectly together. A creepy, slow, powerful song. The lyrics are quite cryptic but still creative. That's my Shiina.

6) various tracks off of Favourite Worst Nightmare, by Arctic Monkeys
What can I say? Some days I like certain tracks more than others. Some days I switch. I've played this thing a lot since I bought it in May. I just like the little stories and the different sounds and so on. yeah.

7) "Kid on My Shoulders" - White Rabbits
You can dance to it! You can sing along to it! White Rabbits are my new favorite band. See them perform this song. A lazy description would be "a bouncier version of the Cold War Kids' funk-folk-rock sound," but you just have to try them out.
We held our tongues throughout it
One day we’ll laugh about it

Have a nice day/night/afternoon/unspecified period of time!
