Top 5 fictional literary characters
ack so hard to choose. So these are just five characters I really like. I wish I could have chosen more high literature characters, but I tend to appreciate them in their own novel worlds. These are characters that pop out as "cool" to me even outside thinking about the novel.

1) the milk carton from Un Lun Dun, by China Miéville.
It's cute and loyal and awesome. And it's a milk carton! :D

2) the Death family, from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series

dudes, I drew her years before the Hogfather TV movie and they cast someone who looked exactly like the Susan I was trying to draw. ack

Mainly, Death, the Death of Rats, and Susan (Death) Sto Helit. They're all endearing in different way.
Death knows what he has to do. He also likes cats.
The Grim Squeaker's SQUEAKs
Susan's on the border between uptight and cool. She's a great nanny and a rocking Reaper.

by the way, look at my quiz result

Which Discworld Character are you like (with pics)
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Carrot Ironfounderson

You are Captain Carrot Ironfounderson of the City Watch in the greatest city on the Disc – Ankh-Morprok! A truly good natured, honest guy, who knows everyone, and is liked by all. Technically a dwarf, but only by adoption. You’d rather not be reminded that you are the true heir to the throne, but that does explain why people naturally follow your orders…

haha yeah

oh my shoot Marc Warren played Teatime in the Discworld movie? He was perfect! Then again, everyone was cast perfect in that movie. And I didn't connect him with other roles! (Doctor Who, State of Play, Wanted) whoa must have been the contacts...

3) Anansi the Spider, various African tales as well as Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Anansi uses his wits to get what he wants. The original trickster.

4) Peter Wiggin, the Ender series by Orson Scott Card
I don't usually go for the "rule the world" types, but there's this aura around him, intelligent and charismatic and just magnetic, even while you see right through him. He takes over the the world as a teenager and still has to deal with sibling and parent issues. And yes, I totally shipped his mindclonewhatever with the Chinese prophet girl.

5) Vergere, Saba Sebatyne, and Ysanne Isard, the Star Wars Expanded Universe novels

yay for strong female characters! These three are so very different.
Vergere's a bird-creature Jedi who's wise and mysterious and has a particular dry wit to her. She was a strict but good teacher to Jacen Solo.
Saba Sebatyne - mother, Jedi Knight. Proud member of the Barabel species, a race of fierce warriors. I liked her fire, the way she talked and her maternal instinct.
Ysanne Isard - Imperial leader with one red eye, one blue eye. Yeah, the whole "fire and ice" thing.

Top 5 Lost moments
1) the Season 2 finale, especially how it told Desmond's story. Set up the Des/Pen saga and explained a whole bunch of other things. Also worked as a meta comment on fulfilling fan faith in the series after the criticism started pouring in during S2.

2) any moment of Sun being awesome. Taking control of her dad's company, standing up to Jin, dealing with the blackmail from Jin's mother, even shooting Colleen...

3) Daniel Faraday and his cute little wave to Charlotte. Daniel Faraday and his rocket experiment. Daniel Faraday and his little Eloise rub. Daniel Faraday saving people.

4) Locke's appearance in the Nikki/Paulo flashback. Because it reminded me of how cool S1 Locke was.

5) Claire sending the bird message in "Par Avion." I'm a Claire fan and it's too bad she was only interesting as a maybe!ghost in S4. But this episode was a simple S1-ish episode, and the message was this little nice bit of hope that really stood out to me in that season.

finally, a related prompt from [livejournal.com profile] ruginthesky:
top 5 things you'd do or say if you were a character in LOST
1) I WOULD HUNT. Only what was needed, because I do like animals, but I also like using weapons.
2) Collaborate with everyone to make a map of the island. Because it could help.
3) rebuild New Otherton, which Keamy and his men bombed... It'd be a great project for the survivors, and hey, it could still be better than the tent/hut things on the beach
4) get to know Daniel Faraday and not scare him off . You knew this would be on here.
5) help maintain Sun's garden. In honor of a cool character, and also useful and comforting. I do like gardening yay

There are so many Discworld books. One time I read 7 in a week. Each cycle I mention contains at least 4 books.

the early ones are just okay, but the Night Watch cycle (from Guards! Guards! to the absolute best Night Watch and the alright Thud!) and the Death cycle (starting with Mort and ending so far with my favorite Thief of Time) are the best and most consistent. Another fan favorite is the Witch cycle, but while the characters are awesome, the books (well, more the earlier than the later) are not as consistent. Some of the standalone books, like Moving Pictures, are good too.

Liking the Discworld series depends on how much you can take British humore coming at you front, back, and sideways. Sometimes he tries too hard, but with the later books especially, the fusion of good novel and funny novel succeeds.

I think that's why I never did - I looked and had no idea where to start. I think I'll try the Death cycle next time I get up to the library. Thanks for the recs! :)

I got into the series when my friends forced me to read Mort (literally shoving the book in my hand and saying "Read this! Now!"), so that's probably a good place to start.

"Par Avion" was one of my favorite S3 episodes. It was kind of reminiscent of a first season episode, and it made me remember how much I'd liked Claire early on. Plus, the ending was sweet, when the bird flew away and Claire and Charlie just held hands and looked off in the horizon.

yeah, that's why I liked it too. It felt nice and fresh and like a S1 episode, when they had a lot more hope.
