at Let Them Eat Cake

Saturday was a nice day! I was able to go to the farmers market as well as a cupcake shop to get cupcakes for my brother and myself. He had the Dubliner (chocolate + Guiness) and I got the Scarlett (red velvet topped with cream cheese frosting). Good meals today and the Earthquakes won their game.

Here are some updates on the Yet Another Magazine writing front:
the YAM staff's top 35 canciones de las '90's
Reviews of the French zombie drama Les revenants, Channel 4's Utopia, John Ajvide Lindqvist's Little Star, and the illustrated novel A Monster Calls.

Both those cupcakes sound reallly good right now. I don't think I've ever had one with Guiness in it though, did you taste it?

And I've heard good things about Utopia I really want to check it out.

I didn't taste this one, but I've tasted some other things with Guinness in them and they tasted alright.

my default and this icon are from Utopia. It's a very unique show, and probably my favorite thing from this year so far.

Good-tasting, too. The thing on the plate was a sweet potato biscuit, which didn't have a strong sweet potato flavor but had the sweet potato savory richness with walnuts on top.

Mmm, cupcakes. I shouldn't check posts like this when I'm hungry.

I've used the Les revenants soundtrack as background music when writing and if it weren't in French, I'd be really intrigued to watch it. And gosh, Little Star was the first Ajvide Lindqvist book I read and now I have like one that I haven't read. I just loved the way there was so much music incorporated in that one.

Isn't the soundtrack atmospheric? Here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/feb/18/mogwai-stuart-braithwaite-les-revenants) is an interview with one of the members of Mogwai about the soundtrack.
I found English-language subs online for Les revenants, although for the last two episodes I couldn't find downloads and had to read the subtitles on the side while watching streams. I can't remember if it was for this or a movie where I had to overlay English subs over hardcoded Polish subs. The second series won't air until 2014, if you want to catch up. I'm not sure when the UK remake will go into production.
It's sort of like Lost in the way it semi-focuses on one character during each episode as the mysteries unfold. I think internationally it's only aired over Swedish satellite so far.

In comparison, the one episode of the UK zombie series In the Flesh that I've seen, which has a good followup on concept and some good actors but doesn't have the distinct characterizations or tone of Les revenants. Then again, In the Flesh deals with popular movie zombie types which are somewhat different and more modern than revenants.

Little Star! I was totally gripped, rereading the end on the bus and wondering if anyone could tell what I was reading about. It was great how he showed how people react to and interact with music, and that the use of pop was done in a matter-of-fact way instead of the straightforward dissonance or camp ways I'd expect from other horror material.
