Roundup for the first three months of 2014:
I wrote reviews of Boardwalk Empire season 4, Dhalgren, Navidad & Matanza, and True Detective season 1.

The top two movies I watched happened to be from India: The Lunchbox (Dabba) (2013) and Pyaasa (1957).

As for books, my favorites were Bernardo Axtaga's Obabakoak and NoViolet Bulawayo's We Need New Names. Eleanor Catton's The Luminaries was pretty exciting to read for the first 700 pages, like a more clear-eyed version of Victorian multi-character melodrama, but after that the fated-luck-astrology themes were a bit much, even if the book was structured around them. The story's  good overall, though, so if the TV miniseries version actually gets made, I might give it a try. The opening six-story run in John Ajvide Lundqvist's Let the Old Dreams Die is great; after that the quality goes up and down until the solid novella sort-of-sequel to Let the Right One In. I also started reading the brilliant Moomin comic strips, and appreciated Joseph McElroy's experimental A Smuggler's Bible as a whole..

SPOILERS FOR TRUE DETECTIVE FINALE
While I’m more ok with a positive ending and showing the tail end of corruption (the stereotypes were odd, but that accent scene)

“We also never truly find out how many members of the Tuttle/Childress clan are involved in the child sacrifice rituals. When Rust frets about this in the hospital after he and Marty have caught and killed Errol, Marty basically tells him to shut up. Of course the evil men in power weren't caught, he says to Rust. ‘That ain't what kind of world it is,’ he continues. ‘But we got ours.’”
Tuttle escaped. Though Errol Childress himself was also abused, probably chosen due to his size and outsider status to become the latest incarnation of the Yellow King or some sort of priest who violates the sacrifices. The network probably started to disband in 1995, but he continued to abduct people

There was a one-time special. Many people didn't like it, for the different art style and other aspects, but I thought it was ok if not perfect. Craig McCracken wasn't involved.

Samurai Flamenco was interesting, but then there's a plot change at the end of episode 7 that comes out of nowhere and I didn't want to go past it.

I thought it was ok but overhyped. My favorite episode was episode 5 but the worst episode to me was episode 6.

just how they made the former child prostitute just come on to Marty like that. Yeah it called back to Rust's "down payment" line but I think the same basic plot things could have happened while still writing her as a character and not just a plot device. Also I really like Maggie and I understand her going to Rust but how it panned out... the whole infidelity plot was tiring to me even when I saw hints of it in the first episode.

did you see this new Bruce Timm Batman short (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IFwOS2R9o_8)? I think it's ok but it does follow the spirit of the '30's story that inspired it

for me, i just appreciated the conflict between rusty and marty. it felt like they were just around each other before. sure marty couldn't stand rusty at times but i felt no real attraction or repulsion or chemistry between them. the fight finally brought out some passion between them, in a nonshippy way.

i liked the style of the batman short. looks like bruce timm took that overly sharp look he's had for a while starting with the later b:tas series and the superman series and dialed it back down to the softer look the earlier b:tas series had.

That's true. Bros for life.
I liked the memes that came out of the show too, like this:

Yeah it has a great look. I wonder if this was a one-time thing for Batman's anniversary. I heard he did a short for Superman too but I'd have to look it up.

I really need to read We Need New Names but I'm not sure if the library has more than one copy. Hopefully. And I should try Let The Old Dreams die again. Or maybe I'll just read the Let The Right One In sequel and be done.

We Need New Names ends at an unusual point, but I thought it felt truer to the immigrant situation than similar books.

Yeah, if you're not into some of the stories in Let the Old Dreams Die, you won't miss much by skipping them.
