THE RETURN OF RANDOM LINKSPAM

Castle, a new police procedural/mystery series on ABC. Stars Nathan Fillion as a mystery writer who has to accompany a policewoman played by Stana Katic (the pretty cool Israeli "Wireless" hero in Heroes season 1) to help solve crimes based on the writer's novels.

The trailer. Way to give away, like, the whole pilot.

Who says middle America isn’t really down with sci-fi and fantasy? When daytime soap operas are so full of genre crack
seriously, I've seen this crazy reality show computer island thing, and then there's been angels and demons, evil twins, witches
Sheesh, no wonder Spike (and maybe Giles) kept watching Passions

Yesterday, I bought Department of Eagles' CD "Into Ear Park."

Usually soft stuff like that isn't my taste, but the melodies and orchestrations were so pretty...I obtained it not legally several weeks ago. I gave the album one listen. And then I deleted it. Because I had to own the thing. Cherrypicking MP3 tracks doesn't capture it well.

It's a side project of one of the members of Grizzly Bear. While I don't dislike Grizzly Bear, they weren't really the type of band whose songs I'd actively seek out and listen to over and over. Strange, because Department of Eagles also has the 60's melody thing going on. -shrugs-

Department of Eagles on Conan

they were part of one of my fave La Blogotheque vids ever:
the beautiful (beautiful!) sequence starts at 4:47.
7:05 - kicks ball!

here's Part 2, but there's nothing as special as that sequence in Part 1

I've listened to the album twice so far. Should be one of the top albums of the year. It really works best as an album; there are some standout tracks but they're best as a whole.

Potential disappointments:

12 splash pages that will convince you that Frank Miller shouldn't adapt The Spirit
even if you're not interested in The Spirit, you should really check out those amazing splash pages.

Frank Miller's done some good things. This probably won't be one of them.
I haven't read Sin City, but Miller's earlier work for Batman and for Daredevil was very, very good. I heard about how he destroyed All-Star Batman and Robin, though, but that's in the 2000's already. The last good thing he's written was probably the original 1990's graphic novel for 300, which is less ridiculous than the movie, even though the movie was pretty faithful and Miller was involved.
While Miller's oeuvre and The Spirit comics share some darkness and noirish conventions -although the genre "noir" wasn't seen as such a genre when The Spirit was being published- they have different tones, different ways of being playful with genre, different, well, spirits.

The casting was very good, especially Sarah Paulson yayyyy. But the movie itself, well...
The Spirit trailer.
There are some cool spots, but the whole thing is just...off. "I have eight of everything" come on.
At least 300 had consistent tone and formed its own little world of bombastic proclamations and slo-mo fights and warrior spirit. This is more disjointed and weak and...yeah.

Dragonball live action movie trailer.
lol, not quite as bad as I expected. More boring than anything. It's taking itself too seriously. Even with the 3-episode fights and high space melodrama, Dragon Ball never took itself this seriously. And it was a lot more zany and colorful and weird and fun than the boring action movie this looks like it's going to be.

uh...
Spider-Man: The Musical to arrive sooner than expected
Julie Taymor's webslinging Broadway musical featuring Peter Parker has upped its release date to 2009 instead of the original 2010. Also, set descriptions and a review of the Spidey workshop between Taymor's old cast from Across The Universe, Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess, have finally leaked out.

from the comments: "Nothing will take away my new-depression blues like seeing the Green Goblin belt out showtunes from a wire harness."

"I actually have an easier time conceptualizing Spiderman 2 as a musical than the original - much more of a character-based piece, rather than depending on action sequences that won't translate to the stage.
Plus, Alfred Molina can FINALLY provide the Doc Oc / Tevye mash-up that I've been imagining since he was cast. ::six mechanical arms do the Fiddler shimmy:: "
lol "If I were a fish-man"

I don't know what to think. At least with Taymor directing, it will look cool.

This horror movie is called "Splinter." It's about a monster...with spikes.
I expect it to be thoroughly mocked in a MST3K or Cinema Insomnia sometime in the future.

For better monsters, check out Zombie Tag!

cool stuff for your day:
SOMEONE MADE A DELOREAN!
lacks the time-travel feature, but still

Walk with the dinosaurs in Los Angeles museum!
awesome. I wonder if some kids or adults got freaked, though.

Now off to watch Pushing Daisies and do homework.

Pushing Daisies returned!

"You want a drink? Lily, hand me your purse!"

Supernatural was whoa shoot family mythology yay

Lol, you should have seen me during the car scene.
me: "ooh, it's going to be the car...wait WHAT ARE YOU DOING"

from the TWOP boards:
Feel bad that Sam was sidelined this episode, but as many other posters have pointed out, he was contractually obligated to go do reshoots on Friday the 13th. The story was written to accommodate that reality, not to alienate lovers of Sam or lovers of the Bro's together.
sorry about the apostrophe abuse at the end of that quote.

I spent a ton of time trying to catch up with flist yesterday (I didn't even know who was playing Champions League! that's how behind I was. I did quickly check in the school bar on Wednesday, but Arsenal wasn't playing and they weren't showing the Bremen game and I was craving foods and yeah), but things have been crazy and I haven't been able to read anything dated from Thursday night on. So I'll probably start flisting anew tomorrow night. sorry, y'all. If there's something I should see before then, please leave a link -or a pic!- here.

now, I've been tossing around this idea for a while, maybe just for an essay, or maybe even a senior honors thesis - that's optional at my school, though, and I'd really have to force myself to do it, but...

I've been thinking about Livejournal. Specifically, how
an LJ is simultaneously an identity, a place, and a product

Identity in how people identify an LJ as representative of a person. It may be the only way one person knows another. For example, "LJperson told me today..."

Place as in: a place to find and contact an LJ user, a place to find thoughts and links and pics and such...I'm not sure whether I should include communities or if they'll just overcomplicate things...

Product as in: even though we like to say and think that our journals are there for us to say whatever we want, I think that many of us tailor our posts to certain audiences. Maybe not to all the flist at once, but we do shape and craft posts like a product to be consumed.

there might also be something about responsibility in there too, how we feel obligated to post about certain things, or at least remind the flist we're alive. I've been gathering possible sources and phrases for academic research. Maybe I'll keep this summer free. Or start something this winter. or something.

Any thoughts on this?

finally, for fun:
They Fight Crime! Get your crimefighters here.
He's an otherworldly devious gentleman spy haunted by an iconic dead American confidante She's a mistrustful belly-dancing college professor with an evil twin sister. They fight crime!

He's a Nobel prize-winning sweet-toothed werewolf from the 'hood. She's a psychotic impetuous socialite who can talk to animals. They fight crime!
lol I wonder if there's a connection between the lycanthropy and the animal-talking

He's a deeply religious vegetarian shaman on the hunt for the last specimen of a great and near-mythical creature. She's a chain-smoking French-Canadian queen of the dead on the trail of a serial killer. They fight crime!

He's a fiendish pirate barbarian looking for a cure to the poison coursing through his veins. She's a strong-willed foul-mouthed mermaid from out of town. They fight crime!
There needs to be a good modern mermaid story. Or mer-man. Besides Prince "Sub-Mariner" Namor, who has been underrated awesome for like fifty years now.

Oh! and this:
Possible new TV show: "Americatown"
Welcome to "Americatown," a Chinatown-like enclave of U.S. immigrants in cities around the world.

HBO is developing the futuristic drama series project, which hails from writer Bradford Winters and producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.

Set 25-40 years into the future when the precipitous decline of the U.S. leads to a mass exodus of its citizens, "Americatown" takes place in a cluster of newly arrived American immigrants in a big foreign city.

Sounds like a really really good idea. Fantastic potential for great storytelling. I hope they make it good.
