List the five scariest scenes ever.

no way I'm keeping it to five

book/short story:
- The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson
When everything goes dark in Theo and Eleanor's room.
I can post a ton of Shirley Jackson moments, but this one sticks with me the most.
- "War Games" by Philip K. Dick
The implications of the ending are frightening.
- "Pickman's Model" - H.P. Lovecraft
The ending.
- there's a Thomas Ligotti story with a weird carnival in a darkness-filled dimension and everything is askew and I can't remember if there's a clown or a fortune-teller machine inside the ticket booth and ack
- King Rat, by China Miéville
The rat battle scene at the rave. It's better than that description sounds.

television
- "Hush," Buffy the Vampire Slayer
when the Gentlemen pull out their tiny knives.
- the opening credits of The Outer Limits
- Doctor Who: either "Blink" -the angels have the phone box- or various parts of "Midnight"
- "It's a Good Life" - The Twilight Zone
the jack-in-the-box shadow.
- "The Midnight Sun" - The Twilight Zone
when everything is melting.
lol I haven't even included Talky Tina and other Twilight Zone creations in this
I still haven't caught up with Supernatural yet, but, remember when it used to be scary? Really horror scary? I was so glad that we had a horror television show that wasn't serialized stories (Buffy took horror elements but was rarely horror) but the whole apocalypse drama takes away from horror-ness. And it's not like demons and angels never inspired horror scares in other things, so it's not entirely the fault of the angels and apocalypse turn. /rant
I haven't watched The X-Files and I was very young when my parents had Twin Peaks on the TV so I'm obviously lacking those.

film
haha so many I have to divide these

CLIMAXES AND ENDINGS
Carrie
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Psycho
Wait Until Dark
Audition

MID-MOVIE GROSS OUT
- Eyes Without a Face (Les yeux sans visage
the face transplant scene
- Hara-Kiri (Seppuku)
the titular scene
- The Hitcher
dog in the police station, or the car draw-and-quarter
- A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa hongreyon)
the hanged ghost
- Martyrs. Just Martyrs.

EARLIER SCENES THAT ARE CREEPY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THEM
- M, the opening and any scenes where the killer could be anywhere
- The Trap (Wana) (the third film in the Maiku Hama trilogy)
so many scenes; seriously one of the most underrated psycho killers ever on screen
- Suicide Club (Jisatsu sakuru)
the school mass suicide. There are moments when I'm hanging around high school kids and when I hear them talking, this scene becomes much more realistic than it might seem upon viewing. That's what freaks me out.
- Carnival of Souls
I know it's a B-movie, but that carousel dance scene...
- Intacto
the forest scene, and the whole system of stealing luck

Jane Espenson (Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica) and series creator George R.R. Martin will write one episode each of the 10-part Game of Thrones HBO series.
I'm on the third book right now, which is much more consistent than the second book (that one had a brilliant and thrilling climax though).
also, via [livejournal.com profile] misachan: Inspired by a character showdown contest, George R.R. Martin has written Jaime Lannister vs. Cthulhu.

Anyhow, to my point. I hate to spam you guys, but our kids at the St. Louis Language Immersion School (a.k.a. SLLIS) really, severely need a new playground. And there's these guys here who want to give us $5,000 for that if we wind up snagging a top 3 spot in their poll, how cool is that?
Currently we're in 4th place. However, my learnings on the internets have led me to conclude, if there's one thing livejournalfolk can do, it's vote to win. So it only seems logical that I turn to you lot for help: you can vote once a day every day (please make a note?) and pass it on.

After watching Community (AHA BOATS AND PARKING LOTS AND TONY HALE AND BANNING MOVIE REENACTMENTS AND STEALING CLOTHES AT THE YMCA AND INNER NARRATION AND LEE MAJORS WHAT), I was helping my brother with a project. At one point, I started humming random things, like a cat food commercial song. I then did the theme to Rocky and Bullwinkle, and continued on to say, "Hey there, Rocky!"
The only thing:
I said it in Rocky's voice.
I continued on, knowing that my brother and mother (in the same room, no not the same person) are used to my weirdness and probably tune me out.
So I continued on, this time saying, "Hi Bullwinkle!" "Hey there, Rocky!" in the correct voices.

And then my brother called me out on it.
He said something like, "Ha ha you got the voices wrong."
I was so surprised that he caught my mistake (and also amused at my mistake) that I started laughing so hard I cried.

Oh, and I also made biscuits.

That came sometime afterward. My biscuits are not made of tears.

thanks to [livejournal.com profile] geekfreak03, I spent all Saturday morning looking at Creepypasta and other freaky websites.

Also found the short short "true" story site Gideon's Key.
This one about the alphabet really freaks me out for some reason. I'VE READ TOO MUCH LOVECRAFT
I'm way too scared to watch number 14 on Gideon's, although I know what will happen

Also, I'm wayyyy too scared to go past the intro page on Ted the Caver. I want someone next to me.

So of course I come up with a story that, when two people see something scary on the computer, one of them will turn into a monster.
Also came up with a story about the carwash.

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] decadentdream!

and Happy Thanksgiving to all American flisters.

some news:

119 killed in Mumbai shootings, Indian commandoes kill last 3 gunmen at hotel
The latter article is more current. Just one tiny nitpick not intended to undermine the seriousness of the story: "Indian commandoes killed the last three gunman at a landmark hotel late Thursday."

I found this article a few minutes after seeing Robert Pattinson spelled as "Robert Pattison" on the ABC Thanksgiving program. aaaaargggghh

Finally, the epic Harry Potter vs. Twilight article commentspam.

I collected some of the best quotes that I haven't seen posted elsewhere.
Warning: negative attitudes towards Twilight contained within. However, I tried get the more creative quotes. Just mentioning an awesome character doesn't count.

I really wonder what would happen if Ned touched a vampire...

It was the best of stories, it was the worst of stories, it was the age of Harry Potter, it was the age of Twilight, it was the epoch of excellent adventures, it was the epoch of gross child-births, it was the season of Noble Wizards, it was the season of Wussy Vampires, it was the spring of victory over darkness, it was the winter of emo moping, we had marvelous magical spells before us, we had a whole lot of boring beige before us, we were all going direct to the fun-vee, we were all going direct to the humdrum-vee - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

speaking of that captain:

are y'all okay with casting spoilers? I won't say what the characters do, just who's playing them. Nothing plot-wise has come out about them yet, so as long as you just scan and not click on the link, you should be fine.

And, the two new people joining the cast of Lost are...
Zuleikha Robinson
(Rome, The Lone Gunmen, New Amsterdam)
she was also the awesome princess in Hidalgo who got to ride off into the desert sun yay

the second person, along with some Freighter Four stuff, and help with name pronunciation
Saïd Taghmaoui! That's an odd pic of him in that EW link.

he was Saïd in La Haine! (THE WORLD IS OURS!)
he was also The Iraqi torturer in Three Kings. The one who asked why America messed up Michael Jackson.
he was also in Vantage Point with Matthew Fox. My mom just saw the ad in a DVD and I pointed him out.
It'd be cool if he kept his French accent for this role.
More and more movies with two Lost people in them. Like, I knew Michael Emerson was in Saw, but I forgot that Ken Leung played the detective there

lol both of the new people were in Hidalgo.
I was really iffy about these characters when their descriptions came out, but the casting looks awesome, so now I'm kind of excited whee

La Haine -related sidenote: the director went on to a disappointing career, making Gothika and currently complaining about what Fox did to his newest, Babylon A.D. He's not the only director complaining about Fox.

seriously, if I could, I would give him my imaginary dream pet project Battle Royale miniseries to direct. La Haine impressed me that much, with how he handled teenage/twenty-something characters and created a very kinetic movie.

Back to Lost:
via [livejournal.com profile] gossy16: Ana-Lucia to return for one episode
as long as it's a useful appearance, I'm okay.

Dan Faraday fans might want to check out this filming report

ooh look at this casting call:
There's Solanga, a Filipino male in his 50s, who's the village doctor in a small rural community. He has some vices, but also has some medical skills. And he speaks "relatively good English with an accent."
yay a Filipino character! They didn't do too well with the half-Puerto Rican (well actresses. Ana and Nikki. Not sure about the characters' ethnicities, though Ana-Lucia was probably either Mexican or Salvadoran.)
Come on, one of my ethnic halves has got to have some good rep on this show

very interesting thoughts about film noir.
Starts back in the Renaissance, with chiaroscuro, and traces influences through German Expressionism and pulp fiction.

And Peter Lorre is in two of the pictures used yay
those "French guys" the article mentioned coined the term "film noir" in the 1960s, just in case you're confused.

I found out that the site Movie Zeal recently finished its film noir month. I really like their choices.

from the article for Rififi, directed by Jules Dassin (my fave film from him is Night and the City though)
"In any language, Dassin seemed to have a knack for directing actors playing bad people so that you could sympathize with them."
-Without compromising their badness.

found this via linkage: Jean-Luc Godard said, "At the time, Rififi fooled some people. Today, it can’t hold a candle to [Jacques Becker’s 1954] Touchez pas au Grisbi, which paved the way for it, let alone [Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1956] Bob le Flambeur, which it paved the way for.”
psh I was so bored with Touchez pas au Grisbi I stopped watching after 20 minutes. I haven't gotten to Bob le Flambeur yet, though, and I do like Melville, and I know that it's because of Rififi that he had to delay making Le Cercle Rouge until 1970.

okay I'll stop rambling.

finally, via [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda: Guillermo del Toro to probably direct every other horror movie in the next ten years.

Buraka Som Sistema (feat. M.I.A., Puto Prata, DJ Znobia, Saborosa) - “Sound of Kuduro”
The sound is fast and furious, and should appeal to those who like their dance music grimy and baile funk-ish.

What is Kuduro?
Kuduro isn’t world music. Well, not the kind of world music that finds its way onto Later with Jools Holland or a Damon Albarn album. This is the raw, uncompromising sound of the streets of Luanda, Angola. Meaning ‘hard ass’ or ‘stiff bottom’, it combines traditional Angolan Kilapanga, Semba and Zouk with Western house and techno.

"What if plaid clothes come from sheared bunnies?"

"DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY BUNNIES DIED FOR YOUR BOXERS?"

"What would a plaid fur coat look like"

"Plaid bunnies...boxing match...in space!"

"How would cats move in space?"
