Stole this from tumblr, where I also got the idea to name the file, "MENACING HAIRCUT."

I have finally found a stable link to share the best mashup ever:

Osymyso - "Intro-Inspection"

12 minute song made entirely of intros. It totally works as a song. It's brilliant. It's amazing. If you have any interest in mashups, download this song.

oh, and I have an interview tomorrow. Wish me luck!

It might be part time, but I got hired by a temp agency last week, so I can fall back on that too.

MUSIC OF THE YEAR 2009

DJ Earworm's got his latest mashup of Billboard's top 25 hits here. Another brilliant work.

My top 20 songs of 2009!

Not necessarily the best, since my taste is weird and sometimes it takes me a year or two to hear songs. Some songs need to sneak up on me. Oh well. There's something for everybody here.

1) "The Fire and the Thud" - Arctic Monkeys feat. Alison Mosshart
If it's true you're going to run away/Tell me where/I'll meet you there
Airy melancholy melody and romanticism flares into dark rock guitars. Fell for this song when I heard it acoustic on a radio show, and I was excited to find out it would be on the band's upcoming album. Humbug wasn't a perfect album, but it grew on me and had awesome tracks like this. Alison gives it a great raw touch.

2) "Purexed" - P.O.S
But when I fall I tend to land like a ton of bricks/Stand like a man made of concrete and sediment
Rap isn't dead. The most inspirational song of the year. Never Better was definitely worth buying, and not just for the fun interchangeable CD covers (that are really brilliantly done, btw).

3)“I Walk Alone” - Music Go Music
I live life in the twilight/I walk alone through waking dreams
Modern indie disco with both an edge and a gift for melody? yes.
Posted lots of links (with free music) of them here. Bought the album Expressions and it's great.

4) "Percussion Gun" - White Rabbits
THE drum line that stuck in my head all year.

5) “Hurt Feelings (Reprise)” - Flight of the Conchords
one of my favorite moments in the run of their televised musical comedy. Song's funny and a bit poignant too.

6) "Hold the Line" - Major Lazer (vid slightly NSFW)
This song had me suddenly stepping in tune in stores because the song was playing over and over in my head.

7) “Angus” - Pintandwefall
Punky little anthem about a little piranha. Cool bass line too.

8) "Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This song snuck up on me. Another tune to dance to.

9) "Heavy Cross" - The Gossip
Addictive pop/rock song with a bit of disco to taste.

10) "United States of Eurasia" - Muse
While The Resistance diappointed me, this song is Muse at their bombastic best.

11) “Come Wander With Me” - British Sea Power
a beautiful melody (taken from a Twilight Zone original song, I hear) performed for the band's soundtrack for Man of Aran.

12) Baptized by Fire -Spinnerette
I still say this melody reminds me of sea shanties...

13) "Fog" - Nosaj Thing
ELECTRONICA WITH A SYMPHONIC EDGE THAT MAKES IT MORE INTERESTING THAN THE MAJORITY OF ELECTRONICA AND DRIFT IS AWESOME TO PLAY IN THE CAR I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT THE CD BECAUSE IT'S LIKE THE SOUNDS ARE TEXTURES AND ANGLES MELTING. phew. had to get that out.

14) "Bonsai Hada (Ordinary Skin)" - Shiina Ringo
Dramatic, with great use of accordion and cryptic but pretty lyrics.

15) Gaman (Frustration) - Tokyo Jihen
B-side that goes crazy with funk shuffling back and forth into rock and then suddenly going samba? Crazy and awesome.

16) "Rocking Horse" - The Dead Weather
The soundtrack of a shadow-soaked cowboy vampire shootout, dissolving into screams at the end.

17) “Undelivered Letter” - Quantic and His Combo Barbaro
Silky-smooth and funky jazz track with something new at every turn.

18) Too Fake -Hockey
I was crusing random streaming CDs and found Mind Chaos. Without knowing a thing about Hockey, I enjoyed listening to it while doing work and partying on [livejournal.com profile] to_boldly_rock. Fun dance rock.

19) “Mannequin (Overthrill Remix)” - Noah
Someone needs to make an awesome dance crew video to this RIGHT NOW.

20) “People” - Chester French

bonus: The oddest dance track about a cannibalistic rave nightmare. You can't help but dance to it.

It seems like half of the times I post now, I'm explaining why I've been gone for several days. Well, due to anthro project fieldwork, family errands, and other homework, I've only been able to really get online around 3-4 AM these past few days. So I've flisted very little.

Today was a good rest day after class, after staying up till 6 AM (okay, with a nap from 10:30 PM to 1:30 AM) working on anthro stuff. Oh, and I had a test today on an entirely different subject. Just one essay question on a Tale of Genji thing. I hope my answer wasn't too rushed.

---

While I'm not into the boutique cupcake shop trend going around right now, I do like the Cupkates cupcake truck. Gourmet cupcakes in a more palatable setting, I think.

See you tomorrow in Downtown Berkeley at 12. Addison and Shattuck across from Berkeley Rep.

I've tried the Red Velvet Cupcake. The cupcake itself is good, but it's that cream cheese frosting that was reallllllllly good.

the menu is here. Somewhat expensive, but a nice treat now and then.

Also, Sweet on You has reopened inside the Subway on Telegraph Avenue. This location's much smaller, but they still have a nice variety of classic candy shop fare. The buttermilk frosting for their cupcakes is pretty good too, and a dollar cheaper than Cupkate's stuff (a bit smaller though).

---

Finally, three versions of the same song. I have an mp3 of the last version here, but I'd like one of the first one. And the second one too, if possible.

Some of the best analysis I've seen on the "torture porn" genre, and very concise but informative on the topic of cinematic sound as well.
Zodiac utilizes an interesting technique when the voice of the Zodiac killer is heard over 911 lines. David Fincher and his sound team assembled a vocal track using two different actors’ voices, alternating each word, in order to create an altogether strange, but not unreal, moment.
aww cool.

List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[livejournal.com profile] croakvegas gave me "U." I'm using non-Youtube links until that UK business gets sorted out. Even if you don't like the songs, the sites provided might help with further musical adventures.

1) "Untitled" - White Rabbits
first song to hear/download if you scroll down here
you lived across the street when we were kids
as we grew older our mothers hoped we'd stay friends

ahaha I cheat. I think this song might have a name now, I forget. But I'm a sucker for the clinky piano-rock of White Rabbits.

2) "Unintended" - Muse
You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended

be quiet be quiet. I usually don't like songs like this, but the melody gets me.

3) United State of Pop - DJ Earworm
Mashup of US Billboard top 25 songs of 2007. Strangely works as a song. The 2008 version (Viva La Pop) is fine but not as fun and danceable as the 2007 version. But the 2008 version does have a cool video.

4) Una Música Brutal - Gotan Project
trance-tango you might have heard in a few ads and TV shows/movies. The last 20 seconds is my favorite part. cool and slinky. yup.

5) Usti, Usti Baba [Altiplano Mix] - Taraf de Haïdouks, Koçani Orkestar; Señor Coconut
An official mix! Balkan cumbia what? hahahaha. I have no idea what the screaming man and dog at the end is about. I think it's a weird CD break; it fits the next song on the album better.

I should go sleep now.

subject title thanks to [livejournal.com profile] toronja, for finding this link

a few words on The Spirit:
Eisner and Miller do have common ground on which to stand: noir. Both The Spirit and Sin City are derivatives of classic film noir, and for this reason it seems to make sense for Miller to direct an updated film noir using Eisner’s classic source material. Or does it? The Spirit the comic isn’t really a derivative of classic ’40s noir, it actually is ’40s noir, albeit for the page rather than the screen. Miller’s brand of noir truly is derivative, with updates and distortions that render it something completely different than the old detective and dame yarns we all know.

Monsters vs. Aliens looks promising, and I like their little bit on Up
Public Enemies! Directed by Michael Mann! He directed Collateral, one of my favorite movies ever, and I still need to watch Heat...wasn't too excited about the Miami Vice film version, though. Still, great cast with cool history-based crime people!

7 songs of the moment in chrryblssmninjaland:
all songs are on sites that let you try them out first.
1) "Boyz" - "The Very Best" mixtape version by Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit
this hybrid cover/mashup of M.I.A's "Boyz" does what was once impossible: it adds even more energy and rhythm to the already frantic song, with Malawi-born singer Mwamwaya adding even bits of Christmas carol melody. You can get that track and more for free here.

2) Council Estate - Tricky
Tricky adds a furious rush of rock to his trip-hop sound to create this great little anthem.
They call you council estate
They call you 'can't go straight'
They call you crime rate
They call you 'can't go straight'
But remember boy you're a superstar
Can't break it, can't take who you are
Can't break it, can't take who you are
Remember boy you're a superstar

3) Mighty Mike - "Beggin For Glory (Madcon “Beggin’ [Instrumental]” vs. Portishead “Glory Box”)
very cool. Try it out.

4) Creeper - Islands
Right from the start I was stabbed in the heart
no I wasn't breathing
no I had been bleeding

it's creepy and pretty and catchy and rock.

5) Paris Summer - The Last Shadow Puppets feat. Alison Mosshart of the Kills
Alison Mosshart's voice is so so strong and pretty on this...I had heard some songs from The Kills before, but her voice just a standout on this live track.

6) Coming Back - Gotye
very romantic and pretty song, with great rhythm.
Though I count the days, they're grey without you
The weather's much better when I think about you
I'm just gonna wait till you come home
Empty glasses, burnt out matches
Curtains drawn on near-full blackness
I'm sleeping through the day
You're coming home

7) The Killing Moon - Nouvelle Vague (Echo and the Bunnymen cover)
It's so soft and waltzy and pretty and it makes me swoon

finally...since this is my first non-101 resolution post of the year, I can use that as an excuse to post this:

罪と罰 - 椎名林檎

Tsumi to Batsu (Crime and Punishment).
my favorite song of all time.
Shiina Ringo's voice is a bit rough in that video, but the performance is raw and rock n'roll.

tons of tracks, so many I haven't been able to get through them all. While much of their work either has a drum 'n bass or dubstep flair or has something to do with The Who or The Beach Boys, they also made a really eerie mashup of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" with Chopin, and managed to even back "Strange Fruit" with Radiohead without taking away from the base song's original strength.

Culture Bully's posted Halloween mashup albums.

Tracks worth a try:

from Night of the Living Monster Mashup
All the Devil ones use the same annoying song
1. Mr. Fab and His Bag O Heads - “El Psycho Watusi”
Cool mix with salsa and tons of random things that fit together rhythmically.

3. Voice Dude - “Grinnin’ Grim Reapers 2″
Blue Oyster Cult playing techno in the Haunted Mansion.

6. DJ Engineer - “Jumpin’ Candy Werewolf Creeps”
Destiny’s Child headlining a techno club on Halloween. Some supporting acts say “I Want Candy.”

10. King of Pants - “When a Stranger Watches”
When a Stranger Calls becomes creepy pop song.

12. DJ Useo - “Black Shawdows”
‘60’s space spy music in the background of a devilishly deep voice saying things like, "Are you afraid of the boogie monster?"

16. DJ Shyboy - “Don’t Fear The Rocker” (mp3)
Blue Oyster Cult meets Carrie, other movie characters to a background of distorted guitars. Really cool and atmospheric.

From The Bride of Monster Mashup
3. DJ NoNo - “County Sound”
Sesame Street’s Count von Count gets his drum ‘n bass on. Could be blended better, but it’s still pretty good.

5. Pilchard - “Jack The Monkey”
The Hives meet Jack the Ripper and Arctic Monkeys.

8. DJ Earlybird - “I Think She Knows That I Put a Spell On Her”
“I Put a Spell on You” meets Justin Timberlake. Really excellent track, even if you're not a JT fan.

17. Juxtaposeur - “Demonique Dimotane”
Oddly entrancing atmospheric drum ‘n bass track with Halloween strings, spooky choir, and movie dialogue.

18. DJ Boasty - “Purple People Eater”
Fun Halloween track, with Scooby Doo intro into more danceable drum ‘n bass for Purple People Eater. And saxophone!

From Mashing Pumpkins
6. Pimpdaddysupreme - “Snap Yo Specials”
Crunk meets ska and it is awesome.

15. DJ Engineer - “Love or Hate Halloween”

oh, in my Solstice Special #2, I forgot Sword of Doom(Dai-bosatsu tôge) (1966)
During most of the film, I thought it was an admirable, watchable critique of the last days of the samurai. Samurai became ronin, women were dishonored, and a sword-obsessed fighter like Ryonosuke Tsukue (Tatsuya Nakadai) is drawn to the path of darkness. Director Kihachi Okamoto maintains excellent tone with traditional austerity and more modern quick close-ups. These techniques hold the film together during sequences that intially seem like random, peaceful digressions.
Everything coalesces in the thrilling finale. The moral ugliness and violence of all that has come before comes to a shocking conclusion, and Ryonosuke Tsukue earns his place as one of the scariest screen villains of all time. 8.2

3 - "Smalltown Apology" (One Republic vs. Bronski Beat)
4 - "Roc Knife" (Jay-Z vs. Grizzly Bear) (MP3)
5 - "A Forest Prayer" (Bloc Party vs. The Cure) (MP3)
Very nice.
6 - "Loose Dancing" (Bangers & Cash vs. The Bee Gees)
7 - "My Man My Bomb" (Feist vs. New Young Pony Club)
Interesting, but I don't like the NYPC vocals much.
8 - "Smokey Fire" (Arcade Fire vs. Smokey Robinson vs. The Gunsmoke Theme)
soft and sweet.
9 - "Countdown To Girls" (Europe vs. Sean Kingston vs. Calvin Harris)

Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] fantasticpants! Well, it was still your birthday here in California when I started typing this…

A song I’ve really been into these past few days is Dr. Dog’s version of “Heart it Races,“ originally by Architecture in Helsinki. You can download it at this site. It’s really hard to find soft songs I like, but this is catchy and pleasant enough to be one of the best summer songs of 2007.

Try this out! Follow the instructions on the picture: when it says drums, and you hear the drums kick in, click on the picture. If it says vocals, and the vocals start, click on the picture. Cool stuff will happen. It’s an interactive music video!

More music: The Raveonettes make a nice cover of John Lennon’s “One Day at a Time” for a Save Darfur campaign, while Spinner has posted Cold War Kids live performances of “Hang Me Up to Dry,” “We Used to Vacation,” and “St. John.” The group has been classified as "suburban angst soul," with an earthy, funk-folk-rock sound full of thick Southern atmosphere- although they’re from L.A. [livejournal.com profile] claennis pointed me towards their live performances for La Blogotheque, the leaders in putting indie artists in weird places to perform (They put Sufjan Stevens on a windy rooftop!). Anyways, the first video on that page has the Cold War Kids performing “St. John” while moving around in a parking garage, using cars and wine bottles and more as instruments. IT IS SO COOL YOU MUST WATCH. There’s another video there, but I haven’t had time to check it out…

Speaking of Sufjan Stevens, he let his rock out on In the Words of the Governor. Give it a listen.

Via [livejournal.com profile] logovo: 80’s music macros. HA.

I thought up this weird Sylar mashup that has Muse’s “New Born.” Klaxons’ “Totem on the Timeline,” Arty Fufkin’s “Liar in a Brianstorm (Beyoncé feat. Shakira vs. Arctic Monkeys), the actual “Brianstorm” by the Arctic Monkeys, “El Tango del Pecado” by Calle 13, and “Sick, Sick, Sick” by Queens of the Stone Age. Really, I marked all the music and lyric snippets and breaks on a piece of paper. Now, if only I had the time, data, and software to actually make it into a video…gaaaah…
Speaking of “Sick, Sick, Sick,” I don’t agree with most other blogs that it’s not as good as 3’s and 7’s another song off QotSA’s newest album, “Era Vulgaris.” Actually, I think the number track sounds boring. But then again, I don’t like the blog indie gods Arcade Fire (oh no! They’re going to steal my basketball now!), so…yeah.

Anyways, I watched the video for “Sick, Sick, Sick.” twice now. It took me a while the first time to figure out it was about cannibalism. Watch it if you don’t want to eat afterward. But that video is so much better than the (CAUTION NOT WORK-SAFE) “German video” for the song. The alternate sick colors and stretch effects are cool, the weird T+A are not.
You can watch the live Channel 4 performance of the song, sans The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas’ guest vocals.

By the way, there’s this German band, Fotos, that sound scarily like The Strokes. Except younger. And German. The lead singer even does that wide-eyed thing that Julian does. They sound more fresh than derivative though.

Finally, there are some weird things I’ve said/thought over the past month )

There’s also Juan Roman Riquelme from Boca Juniors flying across the middle and Vicente Sanchez in red representing Toluca. And Diego looking pretty. And Franck being tough. And Mia Hamm representing the femmes. But really, I’m thinking of putting “footfanfrenzy” in the empty space next to Shunsuke Nakamura (the guy in green and white). Would it work?
Okay, some soccer links:

Yeah! Celtic won the Scottish Premiership! Pic above is of Shunsuke Nakamura, my favorite Celtic player. So enthusiastic, and he makes some great goals.
Tangent #1: Ooh, that’s Desmond’s team. Lost is tonight!
Tangent #2: Yesterday I finally heard “Icky Thump,” the White Stripes’ latest single. There’s a part in the middle that made my brother comment, “What? They’re not Irish!” Let’s just say that middle solo sounds very psychedelic Celtic. Haha
Tangent #3: Nakamura! That’s Hiro’s surname! I’ve already commented enough on the past Future episode on other people’s posts, so I’ll just say this: OH MY GOSH NEXT WEEK SENSITIVE!SYLAR VISITS MOM HIRO HAVE TO KILL WHAT REUNIONS WAAAAH. See the Canadian preview for more information.
Tangent #4: I know how to write Nakamura in kanji! I need to study for Japanese…the oral final’s on Friday and the written is on Monday and Tuesday. Waaah taihen desu…

Oh, and yay Liverpool and MILAN YEAH BEAT MAN U! Ricky, Seedorf, and Gila! Aww, now I like both teams in the final…

Hey [livejournal.com profile] rondaview, something to think about… This person is set to finish college in one year.

So, yesterday we also went to Costco. In the car, my brother told me about one Conan episode when Tyra Banks said that someone was “killed to death.” When we stepped outside of the car, we noticed that it said “Partial Zero Emissions” on the back of our new car. And then, inside Costco, there was a display for the “Amish Original Cedar Gazebo.” The strange, it abounds.

Music
- Hey, Entertainment Weekly has Coachella photos up here along with their day-by-day reports. Stereogum thinks that Björk might have been the best set of the fest.
- Check out Arty Fufkin’s latest mashup: “Liar in a Brianstorm (Beyonce feat. Shakira vs. Arctic Monkeys).” At first I thought that he needed to up the volume on the Beyonce/Shakira track more, but now I can’t stop playing it…
- one band with great buzz from Coachella is The Noisettes. Free legal download of “Scratch Your Name” here. Down and dirty rock like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the lead singer does sound a bit like Karen O.
- Found this a while back, forgot to post it: The eleven-minute animated music video for Weird Al’s “Trapped in The Drive Thru.”
- one of the members of Franz Ferdinand made a soundtrack for the Otters Holding Hands video.
- interesting article on the whorification of Joss Stone and other female singers. Why Nelly Furtado seems to always evade this kind of discussions I’ll never know. I mean, she pulled a mini-Jewel (folkish to dance pop) and no one cries sellout. Despite the differences between pre-sellout Jewel and Furtado, there’s a nagging feeling in my mind that it also has something to do with her tan-skinned Latinness…
- oh, and some of the worst music videos ever/

Conan’s San Francisco week is going great. I was thinking of liveblogging it but…yeah, too much. But I must say two things:
1) Those braids on Boba Fett’s costume had to be Wookie braids. The only Jedi with those small braids were padawans during the Old Republic, and thanks to Boba’s fellow Jango clones, there weren’t many of those left by the time Boba got to bounty-hunting. Geekery of the day.
2) Any non-Bay Area people watching Conan O’Brien during San Francisco week? Need help understanding some of the local stuff? Ask away! I’ll try and do my best to aid your comprehension.

Wow that’s a lot of stuff. I think I’ll save the TV and movie links for later. If you’re still bored, check out my new icons! I’ve got new Heroes, soccer, Supernatural, and the dancing Ninth Doctor above. I’ve also brought back a pretty Sun/Yunjin Kim icon, and added even more Shiina Ringo. Yep.

Hey, y’all, I’M ON SPRING BREAK!!!

So, while I still have homework and research stuff to do, I can still hang out and read and play video games and meet with friends and watch things. I saw 300 on Wednesday (which was alright), and finished Pirates of the Caribbean 2 today, which was annoying in parts but still lots of fun and a lot better to me than most people said. (Hee, Norrington looked like Desmond in some bits, which really amused me in one scene…the Losties should go back the pirate ship and get some swords…)

But, for now, I provide further proof that Youtube is our friend.

It brings us cute doggies!

It brings the funny, like in this (via [livejournal.com profile] lay_of_luthien) cracked PG version of 300 and this Pinky and the Brain: Claude and Peter video.

It brings the soccer slash! Remember this JT/Lampsy video I posted a while back? Well, via [livejournal.com profile] greeniebach and [livejournal.com profile] teaglass, here’s another fun Chelsea video - this time with the question: who’s the prettiest? Watch especially for the hyperventilating and JT’s roundabout reaction.
Unrelated: Germany and France won their Euro 2008 quals today! yaaay

And finally, it lets me show you why I like Shiina Ringo so much.
First, while she is super creative and super musically talented (she composes and arranges and writes everything she sings- except covers, of course), her voice can grate sometimes. So, let’s start with my favorite consecutive three track run, from her 2nd album, Shouso Strip.

Shiina Shiina Shiina! )

And, these (caution, not all work safe) death by indulgence pics that you just have to see. Morbid humor of the highest order.

I just saw three men, dressed as classical composers, skate on ice with shiny numbers affixed to their backs. Joining them was a woman dressed in a light, tan toga-style dress and holding a lyre. A man at a piano was watching them, smiling. Wow.
And then I watched (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] censorthiis via [livejournal.com profile] 5upamofo) Robin Van Persie spank Thierry Henry on the bottom, and Henry dancing with Ade. Go Gunners! Way to start the year!

Yup.

New Year’s Eve-In the afternoon, I watched parts of the NHK Red and White Singing Festival (Kohaku) broadcast from Japan. It’s just the spectacle of it all that appeals to me. I’m not big on most enka, and the pop fluff is pop fluff (gaah Ayu and Aiko). But they have dancing and pretty or weird costumes and mascots and game show-like interludes! It was nice to see Ken Watanabe as one of the guests of honor. One question: does the current incarnation of Morning Musume have less energy or what?
Later that night: Listened to some of the mashups (I still like that “Grease” vs. Snoop Dogg one) and party music on Live 105. I bounced around, surfing the TV channels and then skimming the newspapers and then eating lechon from a baby pig and then drawing flowers and more channel surfing, literally running from each activity to the next. Then-Happy New Year! My family has a tradition that we turn on all the lights in the house, and at the stroke of midnight we start jumping around. It’s supposed to make us taller in the new year, although there’s no hope for me anymore…and then we hug and stuff and my brother and I keep on jumping because it is fun.
Then we have to eat noodles of some kind. My dad made fettucine alfredo, and it made me so full that I couldn’t eat the pancit. But I did have an incredible craving for milk.

Napped a bit and then went online. Went crazy on LJ and did interest searches and I friended new people (hi!) and joined the [livejournal.com profile] almost_unknown and [livejournal.com profile] shiinaringo_ communities.

New Year’s Day- finally started to deal with the stuff from school. To put away last semester’s textbooks, I had to stuff them onto my already crowded little bookshelf. So they’re double-parking on each shelf, basically. Started Season 2 of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and started working on the banners for my profile so it isn’t so talky. Oh, and we went to Christmas in the Park. Yay animatronic bears! Yay tree dressed like Santa! Yay carnival rides! Yay fat fluffy churros! There was also this little black bunny fluffing itself in front of a street trumpeter. Later caught about two thirds of the Heroes marathon, and the previews for 1/22 look exciting!

BUT OUR PHONE WAS DEAD. So, no ‘net that night. Sorry if I missed some posts. Was able to read most of them, but didn’t have time to comment on everyone.
It’s fixed now, though.

Finally,

And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my chrryblssmninja.
