oh well, maybe I can write it on BART and print it before class at 12:30 PM

yup

some things that [livejournal.com profile] never_evil and others may be interested in:

When I turned on the TV five minutes before Lost, James Frain appeared! haha, I guess he was guesting as a magician on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Strange hearing him with an American accent. I miss Invasion. I watched a few minutes before switching to ABC.

oh, and while I was dressing up for school in the morning, I heard the TV in my grandma's room playing what I think was the Regis and Kelly show. Someone was singing "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars!" It sounded like a guy, but I checked the site and it said Diana Krall. hm. I know what her voice sounds like, so maybe these walls just really distort sound or something.

I am a sunbaby!

Yesterday was so beautiful outside. Even at 8:30 AM on BART it was so sunny . Between classes I wandered about the campus, eating lunch on a bench by Sproul, soaking in the sun while shielding the chocolate in my purse with shade. It was right next to Strawberry Creek, so if I wanted a break from the heat I could just turn my head and get a cool breeze off the water. Ah.
I spotted Liliana, talked to her for a bit. Then I walked into one of the many small forests and just sat on a bench, looking at nature while eating chocolate. Really good chocolate too- a Verona 85% bar that I bought on Valentine’s Day. It’s both bitter and smooth. It’s sitting right next to me here. I think I’ll take another piece.

Okay, back from my chocolate break. (Actually, I’m typing with one hand, holding the chocolate up to my mouth with the other. Oh well.) So I walked around a little more, sat by the sundial next to the Campanile. Wrote two poems. Smiled at the little kids running around. Went into the library, and found some little blue insect skittering on my neck. My good mood made me only flick the insect away, instead of squishing it like usual. Online, I surfed along to Myspace songs by The Cassettes, Honeycut, and The Fratellis. Good mood continued through my next class.

When going home, I was finally able to spot Angel Island and even Alcatraz from the train. And SF was really clear. The lakes before Fremont station just rippled with sunlight. At home, I just crawled onto on my bed, wanting to nap in the afternoon light.

Gaah, I’m a romantic.

There are only two things I am consistently excellent at. Those things are:
1) wandering aimlessly
2) making pretty AND effective Powerpoint presentations.

Now, on to other things.
Scientists find lakes under Antarctica

On the DW-TV Journal yesterday, I saw a short clip of Diego speaking German. I’ve never heard German spoken with a Brazilian accent before. Yay Diego. Oh, and my dad said that the German deli here is run by a person from Bremen. He told her that I like the team, but got a few details confused. I hope I can meet her now, clear a few things up, ask about the place or chat or something.
Footie-related tangent: Arsenal meets the Queen. Hee, Cesc doesn’t know how to hold a teacup.
And Arsenal’s playing PSV on Tuesday. I will so be in the Bear’s Lair that day. Aww, I like some of the PSV players. But I’m still rooting for Arsenal. Waah, we tied today.

some more Lost and Heroes thoughts )

TV pattern of the week: Forced yet still funny comedy. Everybody Hates Chris was trying a bit too hard on Monday, yet I still got a few laughs, and Orlando Jones was a surprising good guest star. Knights of Prosperity (must…resist…typing… “Cydonia”…) went a bit overboard with the whole Columbian accent and drug lord thing, yet it still stuck to its sweetfunny core, so it wasn’t too disappointing. The best parts were Rico’s bodyguards (the receipt thing was hilarious) and Gary playing with the light-up menorah. And, then, there was Supernatural.

Tall Tales )

Oh, and Smallville was more or less okay too. ) If Heroes has my brain, then Lost has my heart. And Supernatural…Supernatural has my fannish feet. For jumping. When things get scary. Or funny. Or just plain cool.

I saw Slither. Fun and twisted, though nothing can touch the blood-soaked lawn gnome zombie mastery of Peter Jackson’s Evil Dead.

Let’s end with a TV meme from [livejournal.com profile] readywreadywrit:
I changed the rules a bit, and added a few shows to the list:
Underline = seen one or two episodes, or bits of various ones
Italic = more or less follow, or catching up, on TV or DVD, caught but dropped, etc.
Bold = watched since the first episode, finished, or a show you’re just totally obsessed with now

So, last week, I saw:
Impalement while in vehicle: The Descent, tape of Supernatural angel episode
Death by vehicle: Lost
Creepy stalking of females: Supernatural, Heroes, Studio 60, Smallville, even Lost a bit.

What patterns will show up this week?

Crazy spec cracktheory comment thread you must read
involving Heroes, with a bit of Desmond thrown in for good measure.
An excerpt: “and I am all like "SORRY MATE, I LOVE YOUR HAIR BUT I AM SO ROOTING FOR DESMOND" and then Sylar's like "I AM SO ROOTING FOR THE EMO!HAIR, I CAN FEEL THE POWER!!"”
All it needs is Mohinder screaming, “You killed my father! Prepare to die!”

Oh, and this week’s episode was directed by none other than Roxann Dawson, who played the half-human, half-Klingon B'Elanna Torres on Star Trek Voyager. This show is geek heaven.
Okay, Heroes - Run! )

Studio 60: Unlike most posters, I liked the fantasy flashbacks, as well as the big revelation that I predicted a few minutes before but yeah. Much more interesting for the Matt character than the red-state/blue state Matt/Harriet thing. Harriet deserves so much better. And better doesn’t exactly mean Luke.
Jordan/Danny are back to being cute again. And gaah reality lady. Jordan was starting to be all flexible and gaah.
The Metric conversion running gag was more or less entertaining.
What was Simon’s line to Matt- “Don’t explain it, I’m reading it?” I need to cut out that quote and carry it around for frequent use.

The happiest moment of Monday night: The Studio 60 previews. Because they made me shout “Mom! Isn’t that MARIEL? “
KARI! MATCHETT! IS BACK ON MY TV! I actually felt like dancing around. Oh my gosh. She’s what drew me back to Invasion when it got past its sleep-inducing start and metamorphosed into a totally awesome slow-burn sci-fi show. Mariel Underlay was this complex character who had to struggle with the fact that she has become an alien and she’s still the same person but now a totally different species and aaaugh. I am so not lj-cutting this because everyone needs to see. That finale. Oh my gosh. Too bad it was only one season. William Fitchner was ten kinds of goodness as the ambiguously aligned sheriff/local leader for the invasion. Eddie Cibrian surprised me as the good guy human doctor, and the supporting characters (even the slightly annoying second wife) all grew on me. The cinematography was orange-tinted and pretty, capturing the warm swampy feel of Florida (helps that the creator’s wife used to live there, I guess). And then James Frain exuded attractive evil as Szura, the totally dangerous alien who jumpstarted the more aggressive (and really scary) part of the alien takeover.
Okay. Back to the main point. Kari Machett was a revelation, this magnetic source of calm and conflict that really clicked with my mom and me. Glad that she’s found more work on United States TV (she could have always gone back to Canada). Even if Studio 60 is a flawed, soon-to-be-cancelled show, it has a super great cast. They pick Lucy Davis, see the dramatic potential in D. L. Hughley, make Amanda Peet surprise me, introduce me to the aww cute Nate Cordry, and got that cool Kids in the Hall guy to play a cool (if underused) character. Why can’t this show have been better? I hope this becomes a platform to greater things for them.

Sooooo many things I want to post about, but promises are promises. I have no time right now to put up pics or more explanations, but if you want 'em, comment and you shall be rewarded.

Now, finally, the answers to THE LIST!
The rules:
1. Post a list of 20 fandoms.
2. Have your friends guess your fave character from each fandom.
3. When guessed, bold the fandom, put in brackets who got it and write a sentence explaining why you like the character/person you chose.

Some of them are ties, so credit for both. I’ll put the answers in a post later. I like so many characters, though, so I won’t put the ones that I like way too many people in (Star Wars, HP, Kill Bill) or can’t decide (Xena, Battlestar Galactica, Battle Royale). Hints in my profile page!
1) Lost - tie: Locke and Sun.
2) Heroes [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] never_evil, of course] Nathan. He's ruthless yet good, caring yet ambitious. The elder Petrelli is one fascinating guy, and it helps that he's portrayed by the cool Adrian Pasdar.
3) Dragon Ball Z [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] never_evil] Piccolo. He's smart, independent, strong, tough, and yet caring towards Gohan. His cool yet aggressive demeanor really appealed to me. And green is my favorite color -well, blue-green, specifically, but he still looks nice.
4) Discworld [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] teaglass]. Death. He's so nice yet grapples with his Duty and it's funny when he's drunk or tries to apply pure logic to the world. AND HE TALKS LIKE THIS. You just can't help but root for him...or at least understand him.
The Death of Rats, Susan, Vimes and Vetinari are close behind in favorite status.
5) Buffy/Angel [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] soleta_nf] Spike. Yep, another bad boy. While overused and misused now and then, William was both fun and menacing, sly without being all that smart. The weak, tortured poet-turned tough-guy punk vampire was always a distinct, at times refreshing presence. He was emo and dark and a wise-cracking crazy animal who’d beat you up if he felt like it. Though the soul-having thing was bumpy in the execution, it was more or less alright in the end. Even though he’s a Man U fan.
6) LOTR [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] point_earedpain] Galadriel. In both the movies and books, she is strong and awesome.
7) Batman comics (heroes) [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] never_evil] Bruce Wayne. I just really get into his complex character and the whole Bat-mythology. He's my favorite superhero. Sorry, Supes.
8) Batman comics (villains) - Two-Face
9) X-men comics - Psylocke
10) Justice League of America
11) Supernatural [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] never_evil] Dean. I just really sympathize with him. We're both elder siblings who alternately care for and beat up on our little brothers. Also...He's got cocky cowboy attitude. He's got shotguns. He's got the gorgeous Metallicar. It's all cool.
12) Smallville - Lex
13) The Office UK - Gareth Keenan
14) The Office US [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] never_evil] Pam. Oh, Dwight may be hilariously annoying, but I am a super Jam shipper. Jim is cool, but Pam is so sweet and funny and smart and sad…awww…
15) Alias - Nadia Santos
16) Final Fantasy VII [guessed by [livejournal.com profile] silverence] Sepiroth. I really do have a weakness for bad boys, don't I? Especially when they've got cool swords, cool hair, and an entertaining mother complex.
17) Invasion - Mariel Underlay
18) Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Frylock
19) Powerpuff Girls - Bubbles
20) here’s a hard one: The Pretender - Miss Parker DID ANYONE ELSE WATCH THIS SHOW?

Hi people!

Finally finished the comic book for Creative Writing. We were supposed to do an at least 12 panel strip. I did ten pages. Crazy me. I used an old Shadow City idea from 2002. Maybe sometime in the summer I’ll scan it and post it here. Our next project: a scary story contest.

Once again, our film festival page.

To the people who forced Spoken Word to cancel, I wag the Finger of Shame in your faces.

Kennedy Speech and Debate’s Performance Night is June 7th, 6:30 PM, in Rm. 156. Food will be provided. And it’s free!

About the sophomore speech contest: overall, people had better-than-average delivery skills. However, overgeneralizations, slippery slopes, and other fallacies marred some otherwise taut speeches.

The sun makes me happy.

I just finished reading Frankenstein. It’s a good book for those who don’t mind the Romantic style. I did have fun, though, telling everyone “Frankenstein’s monster is emo! Really, he is!”

TV thoughts:
Alias )

Can’t wait for the Lost season finale. I’m still enjoying this season, though I felt that last year had more forward momentum. Still- is Locke breaking the computer in those previews? And Desmond’s back! Aaaghdfkljdrjareiepacksaspk!

And dude, Invasion was great. )

Sunday nights are great too. )

Even if I was atheist I wouldn’t be interested in The DaVinci Code. It’s just whatever to me. But it was weird watching the previews for the movie and wondering:
"A platinum blonde pale guy is killing people? Why is Spike (from Buffy) in this movie? What is going on?"
Heh, with parts in both DaVinci Code and X-men 3, Ian McKellen’s got a successful summer season. That’s cool, because he’s cool. That is all.

Now I need to get back to work. For my next video project I’m making a music video. I’m still writing the song. So far it’s about stuffed animals and toys and drawings and mirror images and houseplants rising up against their human captors. The title: "The Battle Cry of the Non-Human Peoples." See you all someday!

First of all, Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] claraious, who was unleashed upon the world one May 11th. The world has never been the same since.

My new favorite song is Gnarls Barkley’s "Crazy." I so want "St. Elsewhere" –the album, not the TV show. Too bad I’m saving up for my brother’s birthday gift. Grr.

Link of the week: Lost creators J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof discuss Star Wars

It’s so hot. I like the weather, but it knocks me out. But I’ve been running and jumping everywhere a lot more, and that’s been lots of fun.

While [livejournal.com profile] damagedlilacs and I were chatting in Creative Writing, she came up with the cool idea of starting a Media Club. We hope to have a site with tons of reviews and stuff.
Also, I’ve been very hyper in Creative Writing lately. Why? Because we’re learning about comic book superheroes! We’re watching this fast-paced documentary about the history of superhero comics, and we just turned in a project about creating our own superheroes/villains/interesting person. Tuesday we start creating our own comic books, and that should be very fun.

Here’s the site for our film festival: the Mission Valley ROP Multimedia Festival ‘06

Smallville had an…interesting season finale. All I was thinking was, "How is Clark going to get out of this one?" And Mindwhammy Wednesday lived up to that name with:
-Nadia ghosts and dead doubles on Alias,
-pearl hatches, wicks, candles, crack, orientation videos, and shifts in faith on Lost (Air tubes! Yay!)
- scary Nazi-like hybrid action on Invasion
PS: Did anyone else think that Libby’s last words of "Michael" echoed Heart of Darkness’ "The horror, the horror!"

After all the season/series finales, I plan to do some weird TV awards thing on this lj. Two examples of the categories:
Best Love that Never Was: Clark/Lex on "Smallville"
Best Argument for Patience: The past 13 or 14 episodes of "Invasion"

Aack, don’t know what else to write. Who’s up for a "Crazy" karaoke in the comments?

Or even better: "Crazy" caption karaoke! hahahaha
chrryblssmninja: (adventofpain)
Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. Studying for AP Literature test and all. Hope my essays were okay.

First, the important stuff.

I respect the people who chose to honor the May 1 immigration rights day in the way that they felt was best: either by staying home from work or school, or by going to work or school but still wearing white and respecting the economic boycott. My friends and I did the latter. Anyone who also remembered the labor origins of May Day deserves a cookie as well.

Here’s a good article on Sudan by Paul Rubeasagina (spelling?). You may know him as the guy Don Cheadle portrayed in Hotel Rwanda.
The world fails to act on another slaughter.

Now, on to lighter topics.

May 4 was Star Wars day.

May 6- this Saturday- is Free Comic Book Day. Click on the link to find a participating store near you.

The promised Batman post )

In other news, there’s a Neil Gaiman tribute album coming out, featuring Tori Amos, Rasputina, and others. Should be interesting.

Oh, and vote for the good people in the MTV Movie Awards. The java-packed voting ballots take a few seconds to load, though. But we cannot let certain nominees win. So, even if you don’t like MTV, please vote!
And the nominees are… )

I had fun at the Manga Expo here in Fremont last Saturday. We didn’t have a lot of time, but I talked to some of the artists, checked the booths and merchandise, and BOUGHT AN ADVENT CHILDREN PILLOW! There were more cosplayers this year too.

So…it was Bloody Wednesday on TV. Two deaths due to sharp objects on Alias, two deaths by bullet on Lost, and one guy smashed into a trash receptacle on Invasion. Whew.

The TV Thursday that followed was the day of Daddy Disguises. (Smallville, Supernatural.)

Oh, and the Spring issue of Youth Today just came out in Fremont. The editors squished my article a bit, and added the word "slated." They also identified my female teacher as a "he." Otherwise it’s what I wrote. Some of the other articles are cool too- my favorite ones are about Wizard rock and Fremont's very own pirate store.

Well, see y’all someday.
