This is my Olympic games icon.

I was surprised to find out that I had both top dollar amount and dollar per hour rate for last week! I haven't sold anything yet this week, though.

This song brought me back into a tango kick that led me to listening to the random tango tracks on some of the mixtapes I made on tape cassette years ago. I had to fix the tape when some of it caught caught in the player! After fixing it, I gloated to my brother. Can you fix a tape cassette? Can you? mwhahahahaha

Go read and comment on my life in movies! I picked one movie for each completed year of my life.

As for my novel project, I just passed the 30,500 word mark. Not great pace, but at least I'm getting words on paper every day. The novel's supposed to be told entirely through the dreams of characters, so it's a struggle figuring out how to make it true to the nature of dreams while still getting the actual plot points across.

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter. just ask me for a letter if you want one
2. List (and upload) 5-10 songs you love that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[livejournal.com profile] mc_valya gave me the letter E.

1) "Ekimae (In front of the station)" - Tokyo Jihen

2) "Earth Angel"

3) "El Andén (Con Mala Rodriguez)" - Bajofondo

4) "El Justiciero" - Os Mutantes

5) "Eriatarka" - The Mars Volta

6) "Exo-Politics" - Muse
I've exercised to this song so many times

7) "Ecstasy of Gold (Ennio Morricone vs. Nas)" - DJ Erb

8) "The End of You" - Sleater-Kinney

9) "The End of You Too" - Metronomy

10) "“Echigo Tsutsuishi Oyashirazu” - J.A. Seazer, from Kokkyou Jyunreika, 1973

yay for Misfits coming back soon

Also, this Sunday is the US public television premiere of Sherlock, so I'll see what you all have been spamming about.

Finally,

Stole this from tumblr, where I also got the idea to name the file, "MENACING HAIRCUT."

Congrats to Canada on the snowboard cross gold!

aww noooo Jeremy Abbott - although I could tell he'd be too nervous, even before he started the program. :{

yay Weir doing pretty well!

and I know I have a bunch of Plushy fans on my flist, and I don't deny his amazing skills and his fun exhibition routines. However, though I know he earned all his points, it looked like he was skating to an entirely different song. lol I'm still a Yagudin girl

Lysacek skated well. At least there's an American hope for medal. But even Abbott off his game had better-centered spins. That was the only flaw I spotted in Lysacek's skate, that he leaned weirdly in several spins. Yeah, I'm not a big Lysacek fan, but he works hard and if he does well that's fine.

Funny how the American broadcast was hyping up Patrick Chan even more than the American skaters. He skated to a tango-ish piece, right? nice.

My favorites in the final: Daisuke Takahashi and Stephane Lambiel. But I've liked them for a while now, so that's no surprise to me. Lambiel's recent European Championships free skate was breathtaking. If Weir can get on the podium, that would be fantastic.

lol Contesti's program with the blues/honky tonk thing I was like "what is this"

I can't help but think "Nobunaga Oda" when Nobunari Oda's on the screen, haha. Yes, I know he's a descendant

it's sad what happened to Tomas Verner. Too bad about Joubert too, but he's not a favorite of mine, so I don't mind much.

Takahiko Kozuka for showing promise and skating to Jimi Hendrix. Michal Brezina also seems to have potential.

I see some names whose performances weren't broadcast here:
Denis Ten (Kazhakstan), Florent Amodio (France), and Artem Borodulin (Russia). Were their skates interesting?

DON'T SPOIL ME FOR LOST

ETA: I'm looking bag in my "figure skating" tag at the entries up to 2007. haha.
I can trace my support for Jeremy Abbott to January 29, 2008. Still feel sad for him right now.
The female skaters I'm looking forward to watching are Mirai Nagasu and Yu-Na Kim. I haven't been able to watch as much to get excited over others, so if there's someone I should keep an eye out for, tell me!
chrryblssmninja: (northbeach)
So, late Thanksgiving night, I was looking up Bai Juyi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow" (also known as "Tale of Unending Pain") for my Tale of Genji paper.
Two translations here; the second one's just selections from the poem.
[livejournal.com profile] silverence posted another translation in the comments here a while ago, but I think a forum posting would look less acceptable in the bibliography than actual sites devoted to the poem, though I can't find much on those site authors.

So while I was starting my paper, I felt like just having softer music playing. So I started off my media player with "Mon Coeur S'ouvre à Ta Voix" from a recording of the opera "Samson and Dalila." Sometime in the middle of my writing/research session, there was my favorite Astor Piazzolla piece, "Luna."

Since I was at the same time looking up info on the poem, which is based on the history/story of an Emperor searching for the soul of his love after being forced to have her strangled...all this music seemed so sad!

After Cibelle's cover of "Inútil paisagem (Useless Path)," played, I turned off the media player and was inspired to write this poem.

cut to save flisters from my feeble attempts at poetry )

alright, now I better flist and tumblr and do happy things now
oh, and eat flan. yes.

List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[livejournal.com profile] croakvegas gave me "U." I'm using non-Youtube links until that UK business gets sorted out. Even if you don't like the songs, the sites provided might help with further musical adventures.

1) "Untitled" - White Rabbits
first song to hear/download if you scroll down here
you lived across the street when we were kids
as we grew older our mothers hoped we'd stay friends

ahaha I cheat. I think this song might have a name now, I forget. But I'm a sucker for the clinky piano-rock of White Rabbits.

2) "Unintended" - Muse
You could be my unintended
Choice to live my life extended

be quiet be quiet. I usually don't like songs like this, but the melody gets me.

3) United State of Pop - DJ Earworm
Mashup of US Billboard top 25 songs of 2007. Strangely works as a song. The 2008 version (Viva La Pop) is fine but not as fun and danceable as the 2007 version. But the 2008 version does have a cool video.

4) Una Música Brutal - Gotan Project
trance-tango you might have heard in a few ads and TV shows/movies. The last 20 seconds is my favorite part. cool and slinky. yup.

5) Usti, Usti Baba [Altiplano Mix] - Taraf de Haïdouks, Koçani Orkestar; Señor Coconut
An official mix! Balkan cumbia what? hahahaha. I have no idea what the screaming man and dog at the end is about. I think it's a weird CD break; it fits the next song on the album better.

I should go sleep now.
chrryblssmninja: (glovesamourai)
I am reposting these poems I found.

both found in the CD Astor Piazolla: El Tango conducted by Gidon Kremer

The song’s in Italian, the poem is in Spanish. I’ll just put down the English translations provided.

Preludio para el año 3001 (Rinascero)
By Angela Denia Tarenzi after original Spanish text by Horacio Ferrer
Translated by Robert Cowart
You should really hear the song- so forceful and strong and stirring and wow.

I shall be reborn a fine evening,
With this desire to love and to live stronger still
I’ll be reborn (it is destiny) in the year 3001,
My lovely city will be a festival of color.

The stray dogs will bark at my shadow…
With my modest baggage I’ll arrive from the Great Beyond
And kneeling at the edge of the transparent sea
I shall shape for myself a new heart from salt and mud.

A vagabond, a clown, and a magician will come;
My immortal comrades, shouting “Courage…arise.
“That’s the way! Take heart, be born! Courage, brother,
‘For the work of death and rebirth is beautiful but hard.”

I shall be reborn! Reborn! Reborn!
And an unearthly voice will give to me
The great and pure faith that will serve me…
I shall return…again I shall believe…and struggle!
I’ll wear a red flower in my button-hold
And I shall be reborn whether anyone else ever has!
My country- 30th century- you will see:
I shall be reborn! Reborn! Reborn!

I shall be revorn from the things I have loved so deeply…
When the shadows of the house say softly “He is here!”
I shall kiss the memory of your quiet eyes,
To complete the poem I left half-done.

I shall be reborn from the fruit of a village market
And the grimy ambience of a romantic café,
From the ruined village that crumbled in an earthquake
And from the rage of the Southern people, I shall be born.

You see, I’ll be born in the year 3001
And with the people who never were, but will be then;
We will bless the earth, our earth…and I swear to you
That this country shall come into being once again

I shall be reborn! Reborn! Reborn!
And an unearthly voice shall give to me
My country…30th century…you will see…
I shall be reborn! Reborn! Reborn!

El Tango, by Jorge Luis Borges
Translation by Anthony Kerrigan

“Where are they now?” elegies ask
About those who are no longer, as if there were
A region where Yesterday could be
Today, the Still and Not Yet.

Where (I echo) can that malevolence be,
The malignity founded in dusty dirt
Lanes or in lost towns,
By the sect of defiance and the knife?

Where are they now, those who passed on,
Leaving an episode to Epic
A fable to Time, men who knifed each other
Without hate or lucre or passion in love?

I look for them in legend, in the final
Ember that like a vague rose
Holds something of that brave crew,
Of men named Corrales or Balvanera.

What obscure alleyways or wasteland
Of heaven is darkened by the hard
Shad of the men who was shadow,
Muraña, that Knife of Palermo?

Where the deadly Ibarra (may the saints
Forgive him!) who killed his brother
On a railroad overpass, because the other’s
Dead were more, and thus he evened the score?

A mythology of knife thrusts
Slowly dying in oblivion
A chanson de geste lost
In sordid police reports

There is another ember, another burning rose
In the ash that keeps them whole:
And these the haughty knifers live on
And the silent dagger’s bulk.

Though the facitious dagger or that other dagger,
Time, sink them into the mire,
Today, beyond time and misshapen
Death, these dead men live on in the tango.

They are in the music, in the strings
Of an obstinate and elaborate guitar,
Which weaves a fiesta and the innocence
Of courage into a fortuitous milonga.

The yellow carousel of horse and lion
Whirls in the hollow while I hear the echo
Of those tangos of Arolas and Greco
I watched danced on the pavement

Or an instant that today stands out alone,
Without before or after, against oblivion,
And has the taste of everything lost,
Everything lost and recovered.

There is nostalgia in every chord:
The other patio and the half-seen vine,
(The South, behind suspicious walls,
Keeps a knife and a guitar.)

This burst of sound, the tango, this
Wantoness defies the routine years:
Made of time and dust, man lasts
Less long than the libidinous melody,

Which is only time. The tango spawns a turbid
Unread past in certain measure true:
An impossible recollection of having died
Fighting, on some corner of a suburb.

Here's audio of Caetano Veloso reading the poem in its original Spanish.

The Professional

Cool, Levelheaded, Lethal

The Professional is the most dangerous of all villains. You do what you do better than anyone, because, as a Professional, you have standards.

The Professional is like the Crook in that they both desire money. But the Professional wants more than that. The Professional wants job satisfaction. It isn't sadism really, he just wants to be sure that the job is done, and done well. No hard feelings, it's just business. Professionals prefer to work alone, but will work in groups if given incentive.

The greatest weakness of a Professional is risk. A Professional is business-like, but can't resist a challenge. They often use the word "worthy opponent". People like that are easily baited. And if a Professional is eventually cornered (not easy to do), they might lose it.

First off, via flist...
If you see a "Career Cruising" meme going around, please don't participate or pass it on. It's not a free quiz--it's on a pay site, and by using whoever's login/password it is, you're going to get them into a huge amount of trouble. It's a site for professional career counselors and their clients, and my suspicion is that one of those clients leaked the password, probably to their friends, and it went wild from there. So, you know, for the sake of this poor counselor, please tell people to delete or lock their meme entries or not participate at all. I don't know if the counselor can change his/her password, either.

Okay, A LONG TALE OF FANNISH APPRECIATION OF MUSIC )

"Big Shots," which stars Michael Vartan,
Hey, nice to see he’s found work again. His guest spot as a snooty French chef on Kitchen Confidential was fun. It seems like ABC is treating its actors better this past one or two years; a lot of the good actors from canceled shows (some of “The Nine,” for example) have found new jobs at the same network.

At midseason, ABC will bring back "Lost" -- most likely on Wednesdays -- for an uninterrupted run.
Please make it Wednesday. Seeing Lost on some other day will mess with my mind.

If you’re wondering about what Cheryl Tweedy comment really affected her, or who Tweedy is, well…she’s part of a pop girl group, doesn’t wear much, and is married to Ashley Cole. Grr, Ashley Cole. As an Arsenal fan, I kind of want to blame the whole thing on Cashley.
Check out the Beastie Boys’s new instrumental direction. It sounds alright, but it’s like leading up to something, or serving as a soundtrack, more than an actual song.
Myspacers trash Annie Lennox’s mansion
Spinner’s 3X3 feature is pretty cool. If you can make it through the 15 second ads, you can watch live performances by Mew, Paolo Nutini, Rodrigo y Gabriela, TV on the Radio, Amy Winehouse, and more…
Also, live performances from Amoeba.
Members of the crew of Muse and My Chemical Romance, as well as some MCR members, get food poisoning in Virginia; fans respond with death threats
The Austin City Limits lineup looks pretty varied and pretty cool. Muse? Bjork? Arctic Monkeys? Bob Dylan? The White Stripes? Reverend Horton Heat? Queens of the Stone Age? Gotan Project? Paolo Nutini? Regina Spektor? DeVotchKa? M.I.A.? Andrew Bird? Yo La Tengo? I'm running out of question marks here. Hope that some of these acts get shown on PBS's show.
Check this out- type in the name of song, and it finds the music video for you.
And, coming back to TV: John Krasinski (Jim on “The Office”) plays guitar in Ben Gibbard show

And now, I end with a little chant I made up in Japanese for my favorite Scottish soccer club, Celtic.
Ichi, ni, san, shi
Celtic ni kachite imasu!
Go, roku, shichi, hachi
Shunsuke wa ganbarimasu!

Basically, it’s “1, 2, 3,4, Celtic is winning! 5, 6, 7, 8, Shunsuke (Nakamura) will succeed!” hee.

Happy April Fools Day! Sorry, I promise no tricks in this post. I do provide this great link to Fool’s Day Hoaxes, though. I decided to give a break to the linkage this week, though. Links shall come someday later, along with the 10 things meme that everyone’s tagged me for again…
Do read this, though, if you seek interesting thoughts on the past Lost episode. Buried alive!

I did have a Lost dream this week, though. In Othertown, Kate was doing this weird yet fun clapping dance with Paolo under a tree. Past them, where everyone thought the sea began, was actually a paved road. On that road, Ben and Juliet were patrolling in an open Jeep. And then I shifted from unseen observer to gorilla and I had to bounce onto the top of buildings in a city full of tall buildings because this big gorilla was chasing me…and I lost him! He crashed into the honeymoon suite of a hotel and got stuck. I was able to high-bounce away! And (as non-gorilla me) then came this thing with seeing old high school classmates and trying to show them music on a computer…

Oh, and everyone check out the results for the character question meme!

Waah Spring Break is over.

Monday: Tried to finish Anansi Boys before returning it to the library, but I started it too late. It’s good stuff- so need to finish it. I did finish Courtney Crumrin Volumes 2+3. It’s this great comic book/graphic novel series by Ted Naifeh (whom I’ve met. He’s pretty cool.) about a dark little girl in the dark little world of rich suburbia. There is magic. And monsters. Check it out.
I woke up from a dream where, among many weird things, the weirdest, most striking thing that happened was that THE GUY AT THE DRIVE-THRU WINDOW KNEW WE WERE IN A RUSH AND TOOK ADVANTAGE AND STARTING EATING OUR FOOD AND I FELT HELPLESS AND THANKFULLY HIS MANAGER CAUGHT HIM GRR.
BARTed up to San Francisco with Loki to visit that newly reopened mall that I can’t remember the name of. We enjoyed basking in the clean shininess of consumerism. Visited various stores, like… )

On Friday, I went with Clara and Anna around Palo Alto. Drank tea, scoured Borders for comics and music and magazines, talked a lot, ate pretty tasty cream puffs from Satura Bakery (like Beard Papa, another Japanese bakery! Ooh parallel).

I wish I had done more this Spring Break.

I’m going to mimic [livejournal.com profile] rondaview now and post lots of great reading material. Bonus poem at the end whee

I will never post my thoughts on yesterday’s Heroes or today’s Arsenal game or the movies I watched on President’s Day. Because MIDTERMS MUST NOT POST AAGH MIDTERMS. I probably won’t be able to comment like I used to on your posts either, although I will be still reading them and I might drop a thought or two. So, for now, enjoy a link and a music meme.

Hey! We won! I watched the US team beat Mexico, 2-0! Bradley is so much better than Bruce Arena. I wrote down a ton of comments about the match, but…I don’t feel like posting them anymore. I’m tired. My head was being split by a headache and slight fever while I was watching, but the match was so interesting that I didn’t fall asleep like I so needed to. Albright and Howard were really the men of the match, though, not female dog Donovan -though he was more useful than usual today.

Spain beat England 1-0, which is interesting. Hee, The Pale One scored! I’m really on a nickname roll here… Argentina beat France, which is a bit sad, but I don’t despise Argentina, so I just wish Les Bleus better luck next time. Brazil lost to Portugal (led by Hair Gel Ronaldo, no less) while Brazil coach Dunga wore this weird lederhosen-like outfit. Only worrying thing there: No photos of Diego or at least Kaká. Yeah, that’s all I care about in that match.

I was also going to post about the Super Bowl (worst ad year ever. But I did like the crabs, dogs, and suicidal robot) and some skating stuff, but…nah. Current mood courtesy of the dry throat, stuffy slight fever, and crazy headache that has thankfully died down- for now.

Okay. TV thoughts!

T3h footcrack: [livejournal.com profile] rennylyleanna posted this fashion video with the German team. Did you see Podolski giving the shoulder to Basti!
And Miro’s pose in that brown jacket, with the slight tilt! So cool.
[livejournal.com profile] rondaview posted so many good videos aack. It’ll take me forever to get through them all. But through them I also found this Iker interview. It’s in Spanish. I had to rewind constantly to understand his very Spanish accent and I’m only Spanish 4 with some extra knowledge (Dad why did you not teach me when growing up and give me cool boricua accent?)
I still need to finish the video, but I like when he’s on cell and ball drops past and he just looks at it like, huh.

Post 10 questions on your journal, and get those who comment to fill it out. Once they've done that, they must post 10 questions on their journal and get their f-list to fill it out, and so on and so forth. Post the correct answers, for those questions that call for correct answers, in the next update.
Whee, time to go question crazy. I’m going to mess with your minds!
1) If you saw a red ribbon trimmed with black lace, what song would pop up in your head first?
2) What’s your favorite novel?
3) If 42 is the meaning of life, what is the meaning of 42?
4) Any strange, interesting, or somewhat disgusting eating habits you have?
5) Have you ever made up an imaginary character for a book/TV show/movie/comic/whatever you like?
6) What two people characters/people/animals/robots/staplers/whatever from separate fandoms should so totally meet?
7) Have you ever wanted a pony?
8) What’s your favorite scientific fact?
9) What role would you choose: Dark Side, Light Side, Mercenary, Medic, or Marketplace Hustler?
10) What character/person/evil dog do you think I’m most like?
